Cisnes & Caballos

Things are busy as always in Cisnes and Caballos! Now that it is the summer holidays we see a lot more older children who show up in the market ready to play and help out with the younger children when asked. Our team has lately presented weekly themes on colours, directions and shapes. The children specially enjoy colouring activities aimed at teaching the targeted theme. Two weeks ago our group took the children to Park La Carolina and they were fascinated by all the different amphibians and reptiles, the children even got to touch a boa constrictor!

CENIT also had to say goodbye to two great volunteers, Karen and Maiha. As part of their school project, they put together a comprehensive activity guide for children in the market. Their contributions will be greatly valued by future volunteers.

Cisnes and Caballos welcome several new volunteers to the family this month. Sarah started on June 18th, she is from Santa Cruz, California. Hollly began working in the market in June 30th and is from the UK. Jon is also from the UK and arrived on the 1st of July ready to work. Finally, this week, two new arrivals came to work in our markets, Chloe and Claire, both from the UK. These new volunteers join Stephanie and Michelle and look forward to giving the children a head start in education.

¡Como siempre, los mercados de Cisnes y Caballos no paran! Ahora que han llegado las vacaciones de verano, tenemos muchos más niños mayores que llegan dispuestos a jugar y también a ayudar cuando se les pide. Últimamente, nuestro equipo ha trabajado temas como los colores, direcciones y formas. A los niños les encanta colorear, actividad que siempre está relacionada con el tema de la semana. Hace dos semanas, el equipo fue al Parque La Carolina con los niños, que se quedaron fascinados con los anfibios y reptiles. ¡Los niños incluso pudieron tocar un boa constrictor!

CENIT también ha tenido que despedirse de dos magnificas voluntarias, Karen y Maiha. Como parte de su proyecto de educación, realizaron una guía de actividades para los niños muy completa. Seguramente, todos los voluntarios futuros apreciarán sus esfuerzos.

A Cisnes y Caballos también han llegado nuevos voluntarios este mes. Sara, de Santa Cruz, California, empezó a trabajar el 18 de junio. Holly es de Inglaterra y  llegó al mercado el 30 de junio. Jon también es de Inglaterra y llego el 1 de julio, dispuesto a trabajar. Finalmente, esta semana, han llegado dos nuevas voluntarias, Chloe y Claire, las dos de Inglaterra. Todos ellos se unen a Stephanie y Michelle para trabajar en los mercados, y están muy ilusionados, ya que quieren ayudar a que los niños tengan un buen comienzo de su vida escolar.

Mayorista

The Street Outreach Program at Mayorista Market is going strong. We have recently said goodbye to two fellow volunteers, Cristal and Erica from The Netherlands. They were with us for eight weeks and, as part of their University final year project, they compiled a manual with activities, projects and helpful hints for volunteers that now everyone uses to plan the activities for the week…

We have welcomed more people to our team of volunteers: Ellie, from the UK, Rebecca, from the States, Blanca, from Spain, Cassandra, also from the States, and Dominique, from Germany, now work at Mayoristas with Amy, who is still doing a great job as the market secretary.

Some notable recent successes with the children include the organization of regular trips to the dental and health centres, where children can have free blood and urine tests and examinations with the doctor.

Since it is the school holiday, we have been getting many more children than normally, especially older ones. Thankfully, with the new volunteers, we have been able to divide the children into two groups. This has been very successful, as it has enabled us to tailor the activities to the ages, level and needs of the children and provide more one-to-one attention.

Recent themes we have worked on with the children have included: colours and shapes, the alphabet, music and the body. The children particularly enjoyed making maracas with plastic cups, lentils and tissue paper and decorating them with stickers.

El programa de Rescate de calle en el mercado Mayoristas continúa en buena forma. Recientemente, el equipo ha tenido que despedirse de dos voluntarias, Cristal y Erica, de Holanda. Estuvieron trabajando en el programa durante ocho semanas y, como parte de su proyecto de estudios, realizaron un manual para voluntarios con actividades, proyectos y consejos. Todos los mercados ahora lo utilizan para planificar las actividades de la semana.

El equipo también ha visto la llegada de nuevos voluntarios: Ellie, de Inglaterra, Rebecca, de Estados Unidos, Blanca, de España, Cassandra, también de Estados Unidos, y Dominique, de Alemania, ahora trabajan en Mayoristas con Amy, que sigue haciendo muy bien su trabajo de secretaria.

En estos meses, hemos avanzado mucho con los niños y uno de nuestros éxitos recientes ha sido la organización de visitas regulares al dentista y a centros de salud, donde los niños pueden hacerse análisis de sangre y orina gratuitamente y acudir a las consultas con el médico.

Como ahora estamos en las vacaciones de verano, tenemos muchos más niños en el mercado, sobre todo niños más mayores. Pero como también tenemos más voluntarios, ahora podemos dividir a los niños en dos grupos para trabajar mejor. Esta nueva estructura ha tenido mucho éxito, ya que podemos preparar actividades más adecuadas para cada grupo, según la edad y el nivel de los niños. Además, ahora le podemos dar más atención personalizada a cada niño.

Algunos de los temas que hemos tratado recientemente son: colores y formas, el alfabeto, la música y el cuerpo humano. A los niños les encantó especialmente hacer maracas con vasos de plástico, lentejas y papel y decorarlas con pegatinas.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is busy, as always and with the onset of the summer holidays our family is growing everyday. This growth in numbers has allowed us to split into two groups meaning our activities are age appropriate. In recent weeks we have covered such themes as; animals, numbers, colours and most recently the body. During "the body" week, the older children learned the different parts in English while the younger children put bodies back together. We also had a "senses" day where we learned about different senses by touching, tasting and smelling. All the children thoroughly this!

A valued member of our team Adrian left us recently. Adrian had been with CENIT for a year, and the children really benefited from his experience. We have recently welcomed many new volunteers to our market. Eilidh from Scotland has taken over the role as secretary. She is joined by Melanie from Austria, and both Chana and Bimo from the USA. All of us are looking forward to the next couple of months and are already planning ahead with great enthusiasm!

En Santa Maria estamos muy ocupados y porque los niños están de vacaciones tenemos más niños. Por esta razón hay dos grupos, de acuerdo con la edad. Entonces hay juegos para los niños más pequeños y otros para más grandes. En las recientes semanas hemos hecho temas diferentes de estudio como por ejemplo, una semana estudiamos los animales, otra los números y muy recientemente las partes del cuerpo. Durante la semana del estudio del cuerpo humano, los niños más grandes aprendieron las diferentas partes del cuerpo en ingles, mientras los niños mas pequeños armamos un cuerpo muy divertido. También, dedicamos un día a los sentidos, como el olfato, el gusto, la vista el oído y el tacto e hicimos experimentos prácticos. A los niños les gustó mucho!

Adrian, un voluntario que trabajó durante un ano regresó a su país, Alemania. Los niños se beneficiaron mucho con su experiencia. Ellos van a exornarlo. Ahora tenemos muchos voluntarios nuevos en el mercado. Eilidh de Escocia es la nueva secretaria. Otros voluntarios son Clancy de Holanda, Melanie de Austria y Bimo y Chana de USA. Todo esto nos emociona mucho y estamos planeando con mucho entusiasmo muchas cosas para los próximos meses.

Kindergarten

Yesterday, July 3rd, all the 29 children (26 six year olds and 3 five year olds) finished kindergarten and happily went on vacation until September. After their first year in Kindergarten, each child received a diploma. The children's exam results proved that they had learnt a lot this year including: their alphabet, numbers, painting and drawing, and every child passed their exam. The kindergarten is very important for the children because here in Ecuador they have to pass an examination of enrollment before they start Primary School. In other words, without attending kindergarten it's practically impossible to get into a school afterwards. As a volunteer working in the Kindergarten, I am responsible for teaching the children basic knowledge of English. The kids are able to speak better English than other children of the same age even in more developed countries like Germany. They know colours, the different parts of the human body and they are also able to count to 15 (a few children who always pay attention in class are even able to count to 20). In an Ecuadorian kindergarten the children have to study lots of things and the majority also has to do some market-work in the afternoons. As a result, many of the kids have great difficulty paying attention during class. This week we organized an excursion for all the kids thanks to a donation from Germany. It was a real adventure for all the children. We went on the highest Cable-car in the world (The Teleférico in Quito) and had a picnic at 4100 metres in beautiful surroundings. This excursion was very important because the majority of the children didn‘t know that there is a world outside of Quito. When asked which country they live in the most of them answer "Quito", so it is really important that the kids are given the chance to discover "another world", i.e. the beautiful equatorial nature outside Quito and also outside their poor quarters in the south of Quito in which the majority have to live.

Las clases terminaron el 3 de julio, y los 29 niños del jardín salieron felizmente de vacaciones hasta septiembre. Se despidieron con una celebración donde todos recibieron un diploma que confirma un año de asistencia al jardín de CENIT. En este año de instrucción en el jardín todos los niños han aprendido bastante: las vocales, las sílabas, sumar, pintar, dibujar… Así lo demostraron en el examen final, que todos aprobaron. El jardín es de gran importancia para los niños, ya que en el Ecuador es obligatorio un examen de escolarización donde los niños tienen que demostrar las capacidades que aprendieron en su jardín, es decir, sin la asistencia a un jardín los niños no tienen oportunidad de proseguir sus estudios en la escuela. Mi tarea como voluntario en el proyecto "Kinder" es enseñarles conocimientos básicos de inglés a los niños. Comparado con muchos otros países, también incluidos países desarrollados como Alemania, los niños saben bastante inglés: los colores, las partes del cuerpo y contar hasta 15. Unos pocos que siempre ponen atención en las clases de inglés ya saben contar hasta 20. Aquí, en el jardín los niños tienen que estudiar bastante, y la gran mayoría de ellos también tiene que trabajar por la tarde, así que realmente no tienen mucho tiempo para jugar. Como consecuencia, muchos tienen dificultades para poner atención en las clases.

En la última semana de curso realizamos una excursión. Fue posible  gracias a una donación de Alemania y ha sido toda una aventura para los niños. Fuimos al teleférico de Quito, el más alto del mundo, y tomamos un pic-nic a una altura de 4100 metros, en medio de la naturaleza andina. Esta excursión fue muy importante ya que la gran mayoría de los niños no sabe que existe un mundo fuera de Quito y si se les pregunta en qué país viven, todos responden "Quito". Por lo tanto ha sido interesantísimo para ellos descubrir "otro mundo", es decir, la maravillosa naturaleza de ese lugar a las afueras de la ciudad, y en particular fuera de los barrios pobres del sur de Quito en los que vive la gran mayoría.

Colegio RV

This school year has been extremely difficult for the colegio's English students. They have had four different teachers, and a period with no teacher at all. Despite these difficulties, the mayority of the girls have progressed well. Everyone in the tenth grade passed both the year and the grade exams. In total, 97% of the girls passed the year. With this base of knowledge, there's no doubt that they will all continue to improve, providing they have a capable long term teacher next year.

Este año escolar ha sido sumamente difícil para los estudiantes de Ingles del Colegio Rosa Virginia. Han tenido cuatro profesores diferentes y estuvieron un tiempo sin profesor. A pesar de estas dificultades, la mayoría de las chicas ha progresado bien. Todas las del décimo grado pasaron el año y los exámenes de grado. En total, el 97% de las chicas pasaron el año. Con esta base de conocimiento, no hay duda de que todas continuarán mejorando si tenemos un profesor capaz y que pueda trabajar con ellas a largo plazo.

Play Therapy / Tutoría de Juegos

In the last weeks, we have started working on the Play Therapy program again. It runs two days a week, with six volunteers; Blanca, Ellie, Cassandra, Claire, Holly, and Bimo. As well as working on the Street Outreach program in the morning these volunteers also give their time in the afternoon to work on this project.

We work with children from the markets of Cisnes and Caballos who have behavioural problems, either because they are really shy or disruptive. The program has just started again after it had stopped due to lack of volunteers so we are still getting to know the children. We normally prepare creative crafts activities for the children, always choosing a topic that they can relate to, so that they can open up to us and talk about themselves. Recently, we have made paper dolls, each child created a doll in their image; we also talked about their families. During the sessions, the children also have time to play freely in a safe environment in a classroom at the CENIT School.

En las últimas semanas, hemos empezado a trabajar en el programa de Tutoría de juegos de nuevo. Dos días a la semana, seis de los voluntarios que trabajan en Rescate de calle por la mañana, Blanca, Ellie, Cassandra, Claire, Holly, y Bimo, trabajan también en este proyecto por la tarde.

Trabajamos con niños de los mercados de Cisnes y Caballos que tienen problemas de adaptación, ya sea porque son excesivamente tímidos o porque son algo rebeldes. Como el programa acaba de comenzar después de una pausa provocada por la falta de voluntarios, estamos todavía conociendo a los niños. Normalmente, organizamos actividades creativas de manualidades, procurando siempre que de alguna manera estén relacionadas con el entorno del niño, para usarlas como excusa y hacer que nos hablen de ellos. En las últimas semanas hemos hecho muñecos de papel representando a cada niño y hemos hablado de las familias. Durante las sesiones, los niños también tienen la oportunidad de jugar libremente en un ambiente seguro como el de la escuela de CENIT.

Dentist Program / Dentista

In the past two weeks the Dental Program has focused on taking children from the Caballos and Cisnes markets to be examined and treated at either the private dentist in the Camal market or in a nearby public health center. So far, we have examined 15 children and have had 10 treated for cavities and minor extractions. We have also been giving out toothbrushes to the chidren, meanwhile educating them and their families about the importance of dental hygiene.

Durante las semanas pasadas, el programa dentista de CENIT ha llevado a varios niños de los mercados de Caballos y Cisnes al dentista para consultas y tratamientos. Hasta ahora, hemos examinado a 15 niños y tratado a otros 10 con calzas y extracciones. Además estamos distribuyendo cepillos de dientes a los niños, para enseñarles a ellos y sus familias sobre la importancia de la higiene dental.

Street Clinc / Clínica de la Calle

We have been working in The Street Clinic for 4 weeks now and every week we find a greater demand on our time and resources. Currently we assess, advise and assist 60 people on a regular weekly basis in our 4 market areas and review another 40 "one offs" (those people who do not require follow up), but the numbers are ever increasing.

A major stumbling block at present is that we don't have either a doctor or a gynaecologist working in the CENIT clinic. Therefore we have focused on reaching as many families as possible as street level, informing them of where and how to access and utilise other local health facilities.

Two weeks ago we provided free health assessments, advice and treatment to 96 people in one morning in Camal Market, with the generous help of 45 medical students under the tutelage of Dr Don Wedermeyer and his wife Marta from the United States. Again we express our gratitude to the above.

Llevamos trabajando en  la Clínica de calle cuatro semanas y cada semana hay más demanda y presión sobre nosotras y nuestros recursos. En este momento visitamos cuatro mercados a la semana y aconsejamos y ayudamos a 100 personas más o menos.

Actualmente tenemos un gran problema, ya que no hay ni médico ni ginecólogo en la clínica de CENIT. Por  eso nos estamos concentrando en informar a las familias sobre los servicios que están cerca de sus mercados.

Hace dos semanas pudimos hacerles un chequeo médico gratis a 96 personas en el mercado Camal en solo un día, ya que contamos con 45 alumnos de Medicina (del primero año), su supervisor y su esposa, dos médicos de Estados Unidos que estaban de visita. Muchas gracias al Dr Don Wedemeyer y a su esposa Marta por su ayuda.

CENIT Clinic / Clínica de CENIT

Unfortunately at present the clinic is not running effectively due to the fact that we have no doctor or gynaecologist currently working here.

We have sent various "please help" letters, but as yet the positions remain vacant. In the meantime, in the afternoons following the street clinic we continue to provide a service with family planning advice and interventions, basic assessments and treatments. We are also approaching drug companies in the hope of establishing a supply of medications, as we are extremely short of all medicines at this moment.

En este momento, la Clínica de CENIT no funciona correctamente porque no hay ni médico ni ginecólogo trabajando en ella. Nosotras hemos escrito cartas para pedir ayuda, pero todavía no hemos conseguido nada. Mientras tanto, por las tardes, después de la Clínica de calle, ayudamos a la gente con planificación familiar y tratamientos básicos. También hemos escrito a varias empresas farmacéuticas para intentar conseguir donaciones de medicamentos, ya que en estos momentos no tenemos suficientes.
