From the markets… / Desde los mercados…

Cisnes y Caballos

Recently we took 18 of the children from our market on a trip to Casa de la Niñez, an adventure playground with slides, ball pools and a trampoline; it was a huge success. There was also an incredible play area, complete with a house, hairdressers, doctors and a shop. This was quite an adventure for the children, slightly more exciting than the park! It was fantastic to see how much they all enjoyed it. Mornings on the market are also going well; recent themes have included weather, colours and farm yard animals. Numbers was an especially successful theme as we really felt that the children had improved by the end of the week, many of them being able to count to 10 and recognize numbers. We were fortunate in that we had 8 volunteers at this point and were therefore able to sit individually with small groups of children of varying abilities. Recently the number of regular children has been increasing, our highest ever being 33 which was bit chaotic but it still worked well. We still have the use of the classroom, which we are going to repaint in the near future; it will remain blue, but with the addition of educational posters. Overall, things are running well and it would be honest to say that the volunteers are having as much fun as the children!

Hace dos semanas fuimos a la Casa De la Niñez con 18 niños/as de nuestro mercado. Este lugar es como un parque de aventura con resbaladeros, juegos y un trampolín; fue un gran éxito. También había una zona increíble con casa, sala de belleza, doctor y una tienda. Esto fue una aventura para los niños, era lo más emociónate en comparación del parque! Era fantástico. También, las mañanas en la Mercado se pasando bien donde enseñamos temas sobre el tiempo, los colores y los animales. Los números era un tema muy "exitoso", porque sentimos que los niños han aprendido mucho, algunos ahora pueden contar hasta el diez, Afortunadamente, tuvimos ocho voluntarios entonces fue posible que dividamos los niños en grupos diferentes. Recientemente, el número de niños ha aumentado — el numero más grande era 33! Fue un poco desordenado, pero todavía era regular. Tenemos un cuarto que vamos a pintar muy pronto, en color azul con pinturas educativas. Hasta el momento todo va muy bien, y los voluntarios nos disfrutamos cada día como los niños.

Mayorista

For the last few weeks, numbers of kids have varied between 3 and 30. "Team Mayorista" is currently endeavoring to improve this inconsistency by making a list of which kids live on which streets. We are also in the process of solving communication and awareness problems by producing an informative letter explaining our work that the parents can read in their own time (they are often very busy in the morning).

However, it's not all bad. Our regular kids are always full of enthusiasm and are showing improvements in brushing their teeth. On 14/03 we took the kids to the Parque del Recreo where we played games and hid the painted eggs that we had made along with some chocolates. The kids were refreshingly well behaved and the experience will give us the confidence to plan another outing.

Another thing on our "to do" list is to organise another room to use for when the reconstruction work begins on our current room. Next week we are going to organise a meeting with the market administrator to discuss the subject.

Durante las últimas semanas el número de niños ha variado entre 3 y 30. Actualmente "Equipo Mayorista" esta intentando mejorar esta inconsistencia, por media de llevar un registro de asistencia para saber que niños y de que calle están asistiendo regularmente. Además, estamos en el proceso de mejorar problemas de comunicación y concienciación para esto vamos a realizar una carta informativa que explica sobre nuestro trabajo, que los padres pueden leer cuando puedan (normalmente están muy ocupados por la mañana).

Sin embargo, no hay sólo problemas. Nuestros niños que vienen con frecuencia siempre tienen mucho entusiasmo, y están mejorando su salud dental como: cepillar los dientes. En el 14/03, llevamos a los niños al parque del recreo, donde jugamos y buscamos las nuevas pinturas que habíamos hecho, junto con algunos chocolates. Los niños se comportaron muy bien, y la experiencia nos dará confianza para planificar otra excursión.

Otra cosa en nuestra lista de cosas para hacer es organizar otra sala para usarla cuando inicie con el trabajo de reestructuración en nuestra sala actual. La semana que viene, organizáramos una reunión con el administrador del mercado para discutir este asunto.

Other Programs / Otras Programas

San Roque

Sometimes as a volunteer on a street market project, you can have questions like, "can I make a difference?" and "what am I acheiving?" My expectations are not grandiose, they are realistic, grounded and were rewarded last week by a little boy called C.

About a month ago, we were introduced to a smiley, active, well-nourished boy of about 4 years. The problem was that during the first week he was unable to sit quietly for any period of time or follow instructions. Continually he disrupted the class by walking around and taking the other children's things. In fact, he only seemed capable of sitting down if he was playing with building blocks.

Now, when he arrives he lines up with the other children to wash his hands, he sits quietly, follows instructions and is able to cut and glue with assistence. His rapid ability to learn new skills whether they be emotional, social, cognitive or fine motor, assures me that he is growing in every aspect and that we are achieving our goals.

Play therapy / Tutoría de Juegos

Today we collected 5 children who are regulars at the "Tutoría de Juegos" programme — a more intensive play session than the market outreach programme provides, with more individual attention. The numbers who can participate are limited, but in addition to the 6 regulars, we have 4 or 5 who come when some of the others are not around.

Axel and Nicole (cousins) really benefit from this programme as their childhood is not an easy one.
On the contrary, David and Dayana (cousins too) are very well behaved but shy and seems to lack stimulus in the family environment.

Somewhere in the middle of this spectrum we have Rubi whose behaviour really seems to be improving but who is too easily influenced by the bad behaviour of her older cousins.
Hand in hand we slowly make our way to the CENIT offices, stopping en route to ride the iron horse, a random metal bar in the pavement.

A quick stop for hand washing, and then we are in the playroom — a child treasure trove filled with games, books, and a small climbing "house". We start, as always with a creative activity, today we are folding and cutting paper to make fans and interesting shapes. We even manage to produce a hat and a boat for them.

Nicole starts throwing books around after a dispute with her cousin, so is taken outside for a 5 minute cool-off period on the "naughty step". Once the activities are finished, we move inside the climbing house to read Peter Pan. We almost make it to the end of the story before the kids start to lose interest but luckily it is now time to return them to their parents / grandparents stalls in the market. We breath a sigh of relief as today was a pretty calm day compared to normal.

Últimamente vinieron 5 niños regulares del programa "Tutorías de Juegos". Este programa es más intensivo e individual que el programa Rescate de calle. Por eso, no hay muchos niños que vienen pero es mejor para tener cuidado con ellos.

Axel y Nicole (primos) necesitan realmente este programa porque tienen una infancia muy difícil, en varias ocasiones tienen un comportamiento muy "loco". Al contrario, David y Dayana (primos también) son muy buenos, tranquilos pero a la vez muy tímidos, parece que no tienen el apoyo suficiente de sus familiares. Esta también Rubí, su comportamiento esta mejorando.

Nos vamos tranquilamente al CENIT, primera parada "caballo", una barra en metal, a los niños les encanta imitar el caballo o el tren. Ya estamos en el CENIT, primera cosa muy importante: lavar las manos y después hacemos una cola y entramos en "el paraíso" de los niños. Siempre empezamos con una actividad creativa, hoy doblamos y cortamos papel para hacer barcos, sombreros, etc. Después de una disputa con su primo, Nicole es muy enojada, ha botado todos los cuentos, entonces se va por 5 minutes a fuera de la sala para calmarse.

Las actividades se acaban y nos vamos en la pequeña casa de los niños para leer la historia de Peter Pan. No podemos acabar el cuento porque después de 10 minutos, los niños no pueden escuchar más; pero por suerte, son las 15:20, la hora para regresar al mercado. Hoy es un día bastante tranquilo en comparación con otros días!

RV Highschool / Colegio RV

In the last newsletter Rosa Virginia's former English teacher Eirik reported of the first term test and its varying results. Just now we had a meeting of all teachers and discussed the girl's second term marks — there are children with severe problems in every class. But as CENIT's psychologist put it: "Problems in school are most often a reflection of personal problems."

Since the 8th graders keep on being a problem — their marks are often pretty bad and their behaviour is a big issue in all subjects — we decided to give classes with the support of a second volunteer. Through more individual work we hope to improve their language skills as well as their behaviour. The aim for the last term is to make them feel more comfortable in using the simple present and to improve their vocabulary.

Nevertheless almost all the time it is a pleasure to give classes to the 9th and 10th grades and their results in the second term exam were significantly better than those of their younger schoolcollegues. For the next month our most important goal is to improve their conversation skills and to review the grammer they learned.

Be sure to check in on the girls of the RV in three months time to read how the second term turned out, hopefully we'll only have good news for you next time.

Historia del Colegio de CENIT, Rosa Virginia, no se repite — pero sí se rima. En el último informe Eirik, el profesor antiguo de Rosa Virginia, informó sobre el examen del primer trimestre y sus resultados eran muy variables. Hace unos días tuvimos una reunión de todos los profesores a donde discutimos las calificaciones de las señoritas — en cada clase hay niñas con problemas graves. Pero como la psicóloga explicó: "Muchas veces problemas en la escuela son reflexiones de problemas personales."

Porque los 8º siguen siendo problemáticos — muchas veces sus notas son malas y su disciplina es un problema en todas las materias — les dijimos que vamos a dar clases con el apoyo de otra voluntaria. Con más trabajo individual esperamos que sus conocimientos de idioma y su disciplina mejoren. El objetivo es: asegurar que las chicas puedan usar el presente simple confortablemente y mejorar su vocabulario.

Sin embargo casi todos los días ser profesor de los 9º y 10º ha sido un placer y sus resultados en el examen del segundo trimestre fueron mejores que las de las otras y las chicas se comportan bien. Para los próximos meses los objetivos más importantes son: mejorar su capacidad de conservar y repetir la gramática que han aprendido.

Eso es todo por ahora, no olvides de volver a comprobar el progreso de las chicas en tres meses cuando culminen las clases.

Music Classes / Clases de Música

In our music classes, we are learning many different songs. We use the guitar, CDs and sometimes only our voices to sing. The students have a lot of musical talent and I am very glad to have classes with them.

I am studying psychology and music in my university in the United States and I am very interested in the power music has in our lives.

In class we have learned songs from my church in Minnesota, popular and traditional songs from the United States and traditional songs from Ecuador. I am enjoying learning new Ecuadorian songs and learning from my students. I am looking forward to our concert at the end of May.

En las clases de música, estamos aprendiendo muchas canciones diferentes. Usamos la guitarra, discos compactos y a veces solo nuestras voces. Los estudiantes tienen mucho talento musical y me da mucha alegría tener mis clases con los niños/as.

Estoy estudiando psicología y música en mi universidad en los Estados Unidos y me interesa mucho el poder que tiene la música en nuestras vidas. En la clase, hemos aprendiendo canciones de mi iglesia en Minnesota, canciones tradicionales y populares de los Estados Unidos y canciones tradicionales de Ecuador.

Me disfrute mucho aprender nuevas canciones de Ecuador y de mis estudiantes. Estoy emocionada por nuestro concierto en el fin de Mayo.

Leather Class / Clase de Cuero

Right now, we have some financial problems and I realized the only solution to solve these problems is to stop the classes for a while. The problem is that we have a lot of products on stock but can't sell them as fast as we produce them. The only solution is to stop the classes now and continue with them after a certain time span. The girls are kind of sad, but I think it's the best solution for all. For me it was a great time and I hope in a year or so, the class can continue with more success.

No hay tantas noticias sobre las Clases de Cuero. Ahora, tenemos unos problemas económicos serios. El problema consiste en los productos que tenemos hechos y no podemos venderlos tan rápido, como los producimos. Por eso tenemos que parar las clases por un tiempo y continuarlas después un tiempo. Las chicas están un poco tristes, pero creo que es la mejor solución para todos.
Para mí era una gran experiencia de trabajar con las chicas, y espero que cuando continuemos las clases, tendremos más éxito.

English Classes in the School / Clases de inglés en la escuela

First Grade and Nivelaciones have been split into two groups and this will hopefully improve the learning process, because the groups are smaller now. Second grade is doing as usual. They are progressing slowly, but steadily thanks to the teacher who always helps me out in the classes and helps to get the children to focus on the class. Third grade is progressing a lot slower and the reason is because of the lack of an Ecuadorian teacher accompanying me. Without another teacher it is usually not possible to give classes. Furthermore, the kids in third grade really progress differently.

Some are really advanced and others don't seem to be able to focus or work effectively in class. To improve the learning process, I have bought books for the kids, which contain Audio CDs and different exercises. I hope I can therefore make the classes a little bit more interesting for the students.

Primer Nivel y Nivelaciones han sido separados en dos grupos. Espero que ahora la situación de las clases se mejore, porque los grupos están mas pequeños y en las Nivelaciones una profesora me ayuda. Nivel dos no ha cambiado mucho. Están progresando lentamente pero regularmente. Gracias a la profesora que siempre me ayuda en las clases para poner la atención en la clase.
Nivel tres esta progresando mucho mas lento. Normalmente no es posible dar clases sin otro profesor. También, los chicos progresan muy diferentes.

Unos están muy avanzados y otros parecen que no puedan concentrarse, ni trabajar en clase.
Supuestamente, una profesora va a acompañarme en las clases desde la próxima semana. Veamos que traiga la próxima semana. Para mejorar la situación en las clases, compré libros con CDs y diferentes ejercicios.
