Dear friends of CENIT,

A warm hello from Quito, Ecuador! We hope that you are doing well and that you are enjoying the summer months. Here at CENIT the past few months have been busy ones with the arrival of new staff, outings to the privileged Quito Tennis sports complex, the celebration of Family Day and the help of a group of dentist volunteers. As ever we have had a wonderful group of volunteers to work with and without whom it would be impossible for CENIT to continue to offer the wide range of programs that support so many children and families in Southern Quito — thank you to you all for your time and effort!

April saw the arrival of two new social workers, Silvia and Yolanda, who are working with the sponsorship programs and the ESTAR Primary School respectively. While in May we saw the departure of our Street Educator David Medina, and welcomed Lilian López, a psychologist, in his place.

The departments of CENIT came together at the end of April to celebrate the saint's day of the founder of the congregation of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Saint Euphrasia Pelletier, by a holding a week of events culminating in a Eucharist service and team games for staff and volunteers on Friday 24 April. The team event included games testing the teams' knowledge of the Saint's life (unfortunately us volunteers were not very helpful in this area!) and other lively party games. Also during the week, parents were invited to visit CENIT's schools where students' work was presented and they could participate in various activities. I particularly enjoyed admiring the seamstress work of the "Rosa Virginia" high school students and sampling the tasty treats made by students from the bakery workshop.

On Sunday 7 June CENIT celebrated an important date in its calendar of events — el Día de la Familia, or Family Day. Throughout the year CENIT does not hold a big celebration for Mother's Day, Father's Day or Children's Day, preferring to hold a big event on a Sunday to celebrate the family unit in its entirety. Many families were present such that the CENIT patio was jam-packed and the children were delighted with the free face painting offered by volunteers. The day started with a religious service and was followed by entertainment including competitions for families, a dance performed by the children of CEA San Roque and singing by the talented volunteer Nicole Heffels.

Here in the volunteer office we're looking forward to the summer months when we'll be welcoming volunteers to help in this year's summer camp. The summer will also be a period of change in the volunteer make-up of CENIT, my time as Volunteer Coordinator comes to an end in August, and this is also mirrored by the departure of my fellow volunteers in coordinator positions. We hope that the new volunteers enjoy their time as much as we have!

Queridos amigos de CENIT,

¡Saludos fraternos desde Quito, Ecuador! Esperamos que estén bien y que estén disfrutando los meses de verano. Aquí en CENIT los últimos meses han sido atareados con la llegada de nuevo personal, salidas al privilegiado complejo deportivo Quito Tenis, las celebraciones del Día de la Familia y la ayuda de un grupo de dentistas. Como siempre hemos tenido el gusto de trabajar con un grupo maravilloso de voluntarios sin quienes no sería posible seguir ofreciendo la variedad de programas que apoyan a tantos niños y familias del Sur de Quito — muchísimas gracias a todos por su tiempo y esfuerzo.

Abril vio la llegada de dos nuevas trabajadoras sociales, Silvia y Yolanda, quienes están trabajando en los programas de patrocinio y en la Escuela ESTAR., respectivamente. Mientras en mayo vimos la partida del Educador de Calle David Medina, y dimos la bienvenida a Lilian López, una psicóloga, en su lugar.

Todas las secciones de CENIT se juntaron al final de abril para celebrar el día del santo patrón de la fundadora de la congregación de las Hermanas del Buen Pastor, la Santa Eufrasia Pelletier, con una semana de eventos que culminó en una Eucaristía y juegos de equipo para el personal y voluntarios el viernes 24 de abril. El evento para equipos incluyó juegos para evaluar el conocimiento de los equipos sobre la vida de la Santa (¡desafortunadamente los voluntarios no ayudamos mucho en este area!) y otros juegos animados. También durante la semana, los padres fueron invitados a presentaciones del trabajo de sus hijos en la escuela y el colegio de CENIT. En particular me gustó ver las creaciones de las estudiantes de corte y probar las delicias hechas por los estudiantes del taller de panadería.

El domingo 7 de junio, CENIT celebró un día especial en su calendario de eventos, el Día de la Familia. Durante el año CENIT elige no hacer eventos grandes para el Día de la Madre, el Padre o el Niño, preferiendo hacer una celebración grande un domingo para celebrar la unidad entera de la familia. Muchas familias estuvieron presentes de tal manera que el patio de CENIT estaba repleto de gente y los niños lo pasaron muy bien con las pinturas para la cara gratuitas ofrecidas por voluntarios. El día comenzó con una misa, la cual fue seguida por entretenimiento, que incluía juegos para las familias, una danza bailada por los niños de CEA San Roque y canto de la voluntaria de talento Nicole Heffels.

Aquí en el voluntariado esperamos ansiosamente el verano cuando daremos la bienvenida a voluntarios que ayudarán en el campamento vacacional de este año. El verano también será una temporada de cambios en el voluntariado de CENIT, mi tiempo como Coordinadora de Voluntarios se acaba en agosto, y esto se refleja en las partidas de los otros voluntarios en puestos de coordinación. ¡Esperamos que los nuevos voluntarios disfruten su tiempo como nostrosos hemos hecho!

Caballos y Cisnes — Street Outreach / Rescate de Calle — Archie Mcdonald

My time in Cisnes y Caballos has been an experience I would not want to forget! During my five months working at the same market, although it sometimes felt repetitive, it gave me the opportunity to really feel like a familiar face that the kids trusted and smiled back at, rather than a wondering gringo foreigner, here for too short a time to have any real effect!

The two parts of the market are very different. Caballos it the upper market where the stalls are better kept and the surroundings are cleaner, it is also a shorter walk to the CENIT room. Whereas the lower market Cisnes is a windy walk through an untidy and what seems poorer section. Half a cow or a big hog hooked up is not an unfamiliar site! As one volunteer Hannah would not let me forget — she thought that this site was utterly vulgar, but one should not be such a wimp about such things. At my market, we have done all types of different activities with my three volunteer predecessors, the activities always aiming to attract the enthusiasm and attention of the kids!

To name a few of the children's favourites: making masks, butterfly mobiles, clowns, Lego days and painting. Every day we have the consistency of washing their hands and teeth before the activities start (although brushing teeth has temporarily come to a halt due to the swine flu scare), and before anything else singing songs and playing games together, creating a family-like atmosphere! Over time it is lovely to watch the children improve their social skills, be able to interact better and have more understanding of the activities. A continual task is trying to engage the children's attention, as with their relentless energy it can be challenging.

However, more often than not their energy is channelled and they can focus well on the task, game, or activity with genuine excitement and eagerness which is great to be a part of! Helping the children to learn both early school material and core values has not been a one way street, as I have thoroughly enjoyed myself thanks to loving and kind nature of the children, mirroring the qualities of the majority of Ecuadorian people. I hope that future volunteers have as an enjoyable learning experience as I have had.

¡Mi tiempo en Cisnes y Caballos ha sido una experiencia que no voy a poder olvidar! Durante los cinco meses trabajando en el mismo mercado, aunque ha sido a veces repetetivo, he tenido la oportunidad de ser una persona fija a quien sonreir y en quien los niños confiaban, en vez de ser un "gringo" mochilero sin suficiente tiempo para hacer algo que vale la pena.

Las dos partes del mercado son muy diferentes. Caballos es el mercado de arriba, donde los puestos están mejor presentados y el lugar es más limpio, además de estar más cerca al aula que usa CENIT. Mientras que el mercado de abajo, Cisnes, es una colección de pequeños pasillos desordenados y parece una sección más pobre. ¡Ver alzada la mitad de una vaca o un chancho entero no es fuera de lo común! No puedo olvidar lo que me dijo una voluntaria, Hannah — ella pensaba que este lugar era totalmente vulgar, pero que uno no debe ser llorón. En mi mercado hemos realizado todo tipo de diferentes actividades con mis tres compañeros voluntarios, las actividades siempre dirigidas a atraer el entusiasmo y atentción de los niños.

Algunas de las acividades favoritas de los niños son: hacer máscaras, móviles de mariposa, payasos, jugar con Legos y pintar. Todos los días tenemos la rutina de lavar las manos y dientes antes de empezar las actividades (aunque hemos dejado de lavar los dientes temporalmente debido al riesgo de la gripe porcina), y después cantamos y hacemos juegos juntos, creando un ambiente familiar. En los meses es lindo ver cómo los niños mejoran sus habilidades sociales, su interacción y su comprensión de las actividades. Captar la atención de los niños es una tarea continua, tanto como abordar su energía ilimitada.

Sin embargo, por lo general su energía está centrada y pueden concentrarse bien en la tarea, juego o actividad con emoción sincera y entusiasmo, y ¡es lindo compartir esto! Guiar a los niños en el aprendizaje de material pre-escolar y valores fundamentales no ha sido un proceso de una sola via. Lo he pasado bien debido al carácter amable y cariñoso de los niños, características que se ven en la mayoría de ecuatorianos. Espero que los próximos voluntarios tengan una experiencia agradable de aprendizaje como yo tuve.

Santa María (AM) — Street Outreach / Rescate de Calle — Anna Veit

The last three months at Santa Maria (Centro Commercial Chiriyaku) have included good experiences, funny days, improvements, hard times and also some sad situations.

During this period we've had a lot of change in our market volunteers. Whilst we've had the consistent presence of Nic and Anna, two Germans, we've been missing the dedicated work of Jon from the US. We were also sad to experience the departure of the two British volunteers, Erika and Pip, who were fantastic team members. And since Anna was leaving at the end of June our most recent addition to the group is Carmen from the US.

Not only were the volunteers changing, the amount of children in attendance grew constantly also. Every day we worked with 8 to 25 children and thoroughly enjoyed our activities. As is tradition we started our morning program with the familiar songs la cucaracha, los pollitos and la familia sapo. Most of the time the volunteers sang louder than the children, as the Santa Maria children are particularly quiet. But on good days our songs could be heard throughout the whole playground. After music time we would do a physical activity such as playing airplanes, picking apples from the sky or stretching. The children love playing señor lobo and semáforo.

Depending on how many volunteers we had we either planned big creative activities or did painting or coloring. When we carried out more complicated handicrafts, like mobiles, the children needed to glue, cut and color and a larger number of volunteers were needed to help with this.

Durante los últimos tres meses en Santa Maria (CC Chiriyaku) hemos tenido buenas experiencias, días divertidos, avances, días difíciles y también algunas situaciones tristes.

Durante este periodo hemos tenido cambios dentro de nuestro equipo de voluntarios. Mietras hemos contado con la presencia constante de Nic y Anna, de Alemania, hemos echado en falta el trabajo dedicado de Jon, de los EEUU. También fue triste la partida de dos voluntarias británicas, Erika y Pip, miembros muy importantes del equipo. Y ya que Anna se va al final de junio estamos trabajando con una nueva voluntaria de los EEUU, Carmen.

No solo cambiaron los voluntarios, también aumentó el número de niños. Cada día trabajamos con 8 a 25 niños y lo pasamos muy bien. Como es la tradición comenzamos nuestra mañana con las conocidas canciones la cucaracha, los pollitos y la familia sapo. Los voluntarios normalmente cantan más alto que los niños, porque los niños de Santa Maria son particularmente callados. Pero en un buen día se puede escuchar nuestras canciones por todo el patio. Después de la música solíamos realizar actividades físicas como jugar a los aviones, coger manzanas del cielo o actividades de estirar. A los niños les encanta jugar a señor lobo y semáforo.

Dependiendo del número de voluntarios planeamos hacer manualidades más ambiciosas o simplemente pintar o dibujar. Cuando realizamos manualidades más complicadas, como móviles, los niños tienen que pegar, cortar y pintar y se requiere de una cantidad mayor de voluntarios para ayudar a cada niño en esto.

Santa María (PM) — Street Outreach / Rescate de Calle — Ellen Segalov & Claire Jones

In the last three months Street Outreach at Santa Maria has provided us with much enjoyment, and the children seem to have got a lot from it too. On a typical afternoon 25-35 children bound into our classroom space (that is rather lacking in character) and fill it with chatter and laughter.

The current format is songs, games and then an arts and crafts activity. Recently we have made mobiles, bracelets, finger puppets and masks, as well as cards for the many special days Ecuador seems to celebrate!   

Our favourite special day was Dia del Niño or Children's Day. As well as making greetings cards we threw a pirate themed party. We all dressed up and face painted patches and scars on the children whilst playing all our favourite party games.

Unfortunately, with the volunteer team going their separate ways very soon we are coming to the end of this temporary program. However, the children have lots to look forward to with CENIT's Summer Camp program running in July.

En los últimos tres meses nuestro tiempo trabajando en Rescate de Calle en Santa Maria nos ha dado muchos buenos tiempos, y parece que a los niños también. En una tarde normal 25 a 35 niños llegan entusmasiados a nuestra aula (a la que realmente le falta caráter) y lo llenan con bulla y risa. 

El formato actual es canciones, juegos y después una manualidad. Ultimamente hemos hecho móviles, pulseras, títeres de dedo y máscaras, además de tarjetas para la gran cantidad de dias especiales que celebran en Ecuador.

Nuestro dia especial preferido fue el Dia del Niño. Además de elaborar tarjetas, hicimos una fiesta con tema de piratas. Los voluntarios nos disfrazamos y pintamos cicatrices y parches en el ojo en las caras de los niños, y jugamos a nuestros juegos para fiestas favoritos.

Lastimosamente nos estamos acercando al cierre de este programa temporal con la partida iminente del equipo de voluntarios. Sin embargo, los niños pueden esperar mas diversión en el Campamento Vacacional de CENIT que se realiza en Julio.

Mayorista — Street Outreach / Rescate de Calle — Nico Leonhardt

Mayorista is the largest market of the "Street Outreach" program. The amount of children that we have depends of the day of the week. Mondays and Wednesdays are normally the quietest days when we can do the most complicated activities. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are more stressful days when around 20 children normally take part. However, in the last couple of weeks a lot more children have been coming due to the summer holidays. It is sometimes difficult to find an activity suitable for all of the children, due to the range in their ages, but generally everyone manages to do something creative with the support of the volunteers. Unfortunately we still have not been able to take the children away from the market environment, after a lengthy search we only have the table space within Mayorista. There we are surrounded by litter and noise. It is for this reason that we are not able to offer a Summer Camp for the Mayorista market this year. We recently started to have a second park day on Tuesdays because the tables are occupied by other people this day. On the two park days the children can be children and they love this. For the three remaining days we always have a theme of the week and we do an art and craft activity relating to the theme and we do games to finish off. Before, and sometimes afterwards, everyone has to wash their hands — the children desperately love this activity too! Due to the swine flu risk we have unfortunately temporarily stopped brushing the children's teeth.

So the Mayorista children are still facing difficult conditions, but they are at least able to enjoy childhood and escape from their daily grind for a small time each day.

El Mayorista es el mercado más grande del proyecto "Rescate de Calle". La cantidad de niños que tenemos depende del día de la semana. Normalmente lunes y miércoles son días más tranquilos cuando podemos hacer actividades más complicadas. Martes, jueves y viernes son días más estresados y casi siempre vienen aproximadamente 20 niños. Pero en mis últimas semanas venían muchos más niños todos los días por las vacaciones. A veces es difícil encontrar una actividad adecuada para todos los niños, porque siempre hay diferencias de edad, pero por lo general con el apoyo de los voluntarios todos logran hacer algo creativo. Lamentablemente todavía no hemos podido sacar a los niños del ambiente del mercado, porque despues de una larga búsqueda solo tenemos las mesas dentro del Mayorista. Allí estamos rodeados de basura y de ruido. Por eso no pudimos realizar un campamento vacacional en el mercado este año. También comenzamos a hacer un segundo dia en el parque los martes, porque en este día las mesas están ocupadas. En los dos días del parque los niños pueden ser niños y  a ellos les encanta. Para los otros días siempre tenemos un tema de la semana, entonces realizamos manualidades conformes al tema y jugamos a algo para terminar. Antes, y a veces después, todos tienen que lavarse las manos, una tarea que a los niños les encanta Por el riesgo de la gripe porcina lamentablemente hemos dejado de cepillar los dientes temporalmente.

Los niños del Mayorista todavía tienen que enfrentar condiciones difíciles, pero por lo menos para un tiempo corto al día los niños pueden disfrutar de su niñez y huir de la cotidianeidad.

Play Therapy / Terapia de Juegos — Nicole Heffels

In this program we work with children who have behavioural or learning difficulties. The key is to have a small number of children (preferrably no more than five) in order to work with them on an individual basis.

At the beginning of each session we sing songs accompanied by the guitar and we do musical games to liven up the children. Given that the children lead fairly sedentary lives, their body coordination is not well developed. Through these musical activities we can improve coordination and also work on body language.

Another important part of the program is the hand puppet that we use to introduce to the children ideas relating to core values. At an appropriate level to the children's ages they are able to learn about new ways to solve problems and to behave more appropriately in everyday social situations. We close the session with a painting activity and washing hands.

En este programa trabajamos con niños que tienen problemas de comportamiento o aprendizaje. Lo importante es que solamente haya cinco niños en el programa para poder trabajar individualmente con cada uno.

Al comienzo de cada sesión cantamos canciones con la guitara y realizamos actividades musicales para animar a los niños. Dado que normalmente no se mueven mucho, su coordinación del cuerpo no está muy desarrollada. A través de estas actividades podemos mejorarla y fortalecer su expresión corporal.

Otra parte del programa es el títere que habla con los niños acerca de valores fundamentales. A un nivel adecuado para su edad los niños tienen la posibilidad de conocer maneras diferentes para resolver problemas y aprender a integrarse mejor en la sociedad. Finalizamos el programa con una actividad de pintura y limpiando las manos.

El Camal (AM) — CEA Academic Support Center / Centro de Apoyo Escolar (CEA) — Karolin Loch

Hello! I'm Karolin, a German volunteer who worked in CENIT for four months (April-July) of this year. During the mornings I helped in CEA Camal, the Academic Support Centre that provides help with homework. The children attend the centre in the morning and study at school in the afternoon, in CEA they receive a snack and then they do their homework. The teachers and volunteers help the children because for various reasons their parents are unable to — their jobs don't give them the time, they aren't able to or don't want to.

In my time at CEA we have had two groups of children: those who are doing their school homework and those that don't attend school. So on the one hand we help children with their homework and on the other we find activities or games that allow the children out of school to keep up some form of study. Working in CEA is never boring as there are many different subjects to help with — maths, language, natural science, social science, and more. This means that the volunteers and teachers have varied work and see new things each day. Working in CEA Camal is extremely rewarding because we know that the help of CENIT is invaluable to the children. However, working in CEA is not without its difficulties. It is at times frustrating to see that the children don't complete their homework, don't understand what they're doing or can't generally understand much of their school work. I have also seen that some children lack motivation and/or don't have any future ambitions, resulting in a lack of interest in their studies. These children can't imagine a life outside working in one of Quito's southern markets and they can't imagine visiting other parts of Ecuador, let alone other countries. This situation deeply saddens me but it's unfortunately a common reality amongst the children with whom CENIT works.

I can attest that the work in CEA Camal is interesting, rewarding, sad and frustrating at times, but overall a great experience.

¡Hola! Soy Karolin, una voluntaria de Alemania, y trabajé en CENIT durante cuatro meses, desde abril hasta julio de este año. Durante las mañanas ayudé en CEA Camal, el Centro de Apoyo para los deberes. Esto signífica que los niños vienen en la mañana y van a la escuela por la tarde, en CEA reciben una colación y después hacen sus deberes. Los educadores y los voluntarios ayudan a los niños porque los padres no pueden ayudarles por diferentes razones, no tienen tiempo por su trabajo, no pueden o no quieren.

En mi tiempo en CEA teníamos dos grupos de niños: los que hacían sus deberes escolares y los que no asistían a la escuela ni al colegio. Así que, por un lado ayudamos con los deberes y por el otro lado buscamos tareas, actividades o juegos para que los niños fuera de la escuela sigan estudiando. Puedo decir que el trabajo en CEA nunca es aburrido porque siempre hay diferentes cosas que hacer, matemáticas, lenguaje, ciencias naturales, ciencias sociales y más. Esto signífica que los voluntarios y educadores tienen variedad en su trabajo y ven algo nuevo cada día. Trabajando en CEA Camal, uno se siente muy gratificado por que sabemos que sin la ayuda de CENIT los niños no tendrían quien les ayude. Pero por otro lado también tuve unas dificultades durante mi tiempo en CEA. A veces el trabajo es frustrante porque sientes que los niños no alcanzan a hacer sus tareas, no entienden qué hacen o no pueden seguir las materias de la escuela en general. También vi que a los niños les falta motivación para estudiar y que algunos no tienen sueños de futuro y por eso no dan importancia a sus estudios. Estos niños no pueden imaginar trabajar en otro lado que no sea un mercado del sur de Quito, y no pueden imaginar que conocerán otras partes de su país y mucho menos otros países. Esta situación me da mucha pena pero lastimosamente es una realidad que se ve en el trabajo de CENIT.

Entonces puedo decir que el trabajo en CEA Camal es muy interesante, tiene muchas riquezas, aunque también puede ser triste y frustrante, pero en fin una buena experiencia.

El Camal (PM) — CEA Academic Support Center / Centro de Apoyo Escolar (CEA) — Harriet Garrad

Every afternoon, after the niños had all finished lunch, there were a few minutes of battle trying to get them all to line up at the gate. We would then make our way down through the market to our CEA room. This was one of my favourite moments because I had children clinging onto my body left right and centre. After everyone had washed their hands and settled down we started the homework on the newly painted tables.

One special day was the 22nd of April — St George's day in England. All the children made their own St George's flag using paper and cocktail sticks. Plus we gave each child a slice of homemade flapjack which was very much enjoyed.

I couldn't have enjoyed CEA Camal anymore than I did. I formed such strong relationships with so many of the children (special mention to Alex!) Due to working everyday with the same individuals, I learnt how they liked to work and adapted which made it a lot less of a struggle. At times they even enjoy their homework!

When CEA finished for the school year we gathered up all the children and gave each one a bracelet, rubber and pencil to remember us by. It was hard to say goodbye but had to be done.

Cada tarde, cuando los niños terminan de almorzar, siempre hay algunos minutos de caos mientras se forman en la puerta. Después ponemos rumbo a nuestro aula de CEA en el mercado. Este era uno de mis momentos favoritos porque siempre tenía niños colgando de mí por todos lados. Al llegar todos se  lavaban las manos y se ponían a hacer sus deberes sobre las mesas recién pintadas.

Un día especial fue el 22 de abril — el día de San Jorge, el santo de Inglaterra. Todos los niños hicieron sus propias banderas de San Jorge usando papel y palillos. Además dimos un pedazo de "flapjack" (un pastel inglés hecho con avena) a cada niño que les gustó mucho.

No pude haber disfrutado más mi tiempo en CEA Camal. Formé relaciones fuertes con tantos niños (¡una mención especial para Alex!) Como trabajé con los mismos individuos cada día, aprendí sus formas de trabajar y me adapté a ello y pude trabajar de mejor manera. ¡A veces hasta disfrutan haciendo sus deberes!

Cuando terminó el año escolar los voluntarios recojimos a los niños y les regalamos una pulsera, un borrador y un lápiz como recuerdo. Fue difícil despedirnos pero era necesario hacerlo.

San Roque (AM) — CEA Academic Support Center / Centro de Apoyo Escolar (CEA) — Virginie Tasset

Everything is going well with the kids in San Roque … The oldest children continue doing their school homework. Veronica has improved a lot: she can now read and write all the letters! We divided the other group of children into two groups. Mariana and Joel work with the children who will be starting kindergarten in September. Me, and the other volunteers (Janko, Caroline, Matthew … ), work with the youngest children. This group put glue in their hair, scream, cry, don't listen to what we're saying, one of them cut his hair with scissors … to be honest, they made me tired. But they are so cute when they are hugging me, I forgive them for everything!

One of the boys, Cristian (aged 4), entertained me by pretending that his Mum was pregnant and then that she had given birth, he also invented a name for his "new brother". When I talked to his older brother, Darwin, he told me that this wasn't true.

On the last day of CEA San Roque before the school holidays, we had a party with the children and their parents (mainly mothers). The girls danced and afterwards Mariana gave the parents the work that the children had done throughout the year. The parents and pupils were really proud!

Todo sigue bien con los niños de San Roque … Los más grandes siguen haciendo los deberes de la escuela. Verónica es la que más ha mejorado: ¡ahora sabe escribir y leer todas las letras! Dividimos en dos el otro grupo de niños. Mariana y Joel ayudan a los niños de más o menos 5 años, que van a empezar  primero de básica en septiembre. Yo, y los otros voluntarios (Janko, Caroline, Matthew … ), estamos con los más pequeños. Este grupo de niños ponen goma en el cabello, no escuchan casi nada de lo que decimos, gritan y lloran, uno se cortó el cabello con una tijera … ¡la verdad es que me cansan mucho! Pero son tan lindos cuando me abrazan que les perdono todo.

Uno de los niños, Cristian (4 años), me hizo reír mucho inventando que su mama estaba embarazada y que después dio a luz, hasta inventó un nombre para su "hermano nuevo". Después, su hermano mayor, Darwin, me dijo que todo era mentira.

En el último día del CEA San Roque antes de las vacaciones hicimos una fiesta con los niños y sus padres (madres en su mayoría). Las muchachas hicieron un baile y  Mariana dio a cada madre los trabajos que hicieron los niños durante el año. ¡Los niños y padres estaban muy orgullosos!

San Roque (PM) — CEA Academic Support Center / Centro de Apoyo Escolar (CEA) — Alice Rayner

CEA San Roque finished last week after a successful few months. We celebrated the special occasions of Mother's Day, Father's Day and Children's Day by bringing in supplies and spending the afternoon making cards, which the children really enjoy — they especially love using glitter pens! We also planned an Easter egg hunt for Easter week, but unfortunately due to rain we had to cancel the hunt — we think they enjoyed the chocolates anyway! Aside from this it has been work as normal, lots of multiplication, handwriting, diagrams and cutting and sticking for the little ones.

Due to the approach of the summer holidays the last few weeks haven't been as structured due to lack of homework (weren't those the days!), but some of the older girls have spent a lot of their time practicing a dance routine for CENIT's Family Day celebrations. As was expected, a few arguments broke out, and there were a few tears, but it came together in the end and was a good lesson in compromise for some of the bossier ones.

I've had a fantastic time working with these children — some of them are real gems, and really try hard. I hope that next year, CEA San Roque continues to be a success, and that the kids keep up their good work.

CEA San Roque terminó la semana pasada después de varios meses de trabajo exitoso. Celebramos el Día de la Madre, el Día del Padre y el Día del Niño llevando materiales y elaborando tarjetas. Esto les encanta a los niños y en especial les gusta usar las pinturas de lentejuelas. También planeamos hacer una búsqueda de huevos de Pascua en Semana Santa, pero lastimosamente por la lluvia tuvimos que cancelar la búsqueda — de todos modos los niños disfrutaron de los huevos de chocolate. Aparte de esto todo ha sido normal y hemos seguido haciendo multiplicación, gráficos, ayudando con la letra, y cortando y pegando con los más pequeños.

Debido a que se acercan  las vacaciones de verano, en las últimas semanas los niños no han tenido tantas tareas (¡qué buenos días!), pero las niñas mayores han estado practicando un baile que van a hacer en CENIT para el Día de la Familia. Como es normal, tuvieron algunas discusiones, y hubo algunas lágrimas, pero todo salió bien y fue una buena lección para las niñas más mandonas.

He tenido un tiempo maravilloso trabajando con estos niños — algunos son verdaderas joyas y luchan mucho en sus estudios. Espero que CEA San Roque siga para adelante en el próximo año, y que los niños sigan con su buen trabajo.

Escuela ESTAR y Colegio Rosa Virginia

Kindergarten / 1° año de Básica

In the last few months of kindergarten the children's parents have been busy looking for primary school places for them. Here in Ecuador this is a tiring task that includes lots of paper work and getting up in the early hours of the morning to queue outside schools. However, at the time of writing the majority of students had found places in schools — many of them are going to the nearby Escuela Velazco Ibarra.

The students have been working well at their normal tasks and prizes were given out for the best students: first place went to Amanda, second place to Angie and third place to Michael. In recent months we have had the priveledge of being invited to do recreation at the Quito Tennis sports complex. We took the children once a week and sports coaches lead them in activities designed to improve coordination such as aerobics and ball games.

Finally, some sad news, CENIT is unfortunately unable to reopen kindergarten in September due to lack of space within the institution. But, on a high note, we wish all of this year's students the best of luck in the remainder of their school career!

En los últimos meses de Primera de Básica los padres han estado ocupados buscando cupos para sus hijos en la escuela. Aquí en Ecuador esto es una tarea cansada que incluye mucho papeleo y madrugar para hacer cola afuera de las escuelas. Sin embargo, en el momento de escribir la mayoría de niños tienen cupos — muchos van a la Velazco Ibarra, una escuela cerca de CENIT.

Los estudiantes han estado trabajando bien en sus tareas normales y se dieron premios para los mejores estudiantes: el primer lugar fue para Amanda, el segundo fue para Angie y el tercer lugar fue para Michael. Recientemente tuvimos el privilegio de haber sido invitados a usar el centro deportivo de Quito Tenis. Llevamos a los niños una vez a la semana y un entrenador guía los niños en actividades para mejorar su coordinación como ejercicios aeróbicos y juegos de pelota.

Finalmente una noticia triste, CENIT lastimosamente no va a volver a abrir Primero de Básica en septiembre debido a la falta de espacio dentro de la institución. Pero de todos modos deseamos a los niños de este año mucha suerte en lo restante de sus estudios.

Music Classes and Choir / Clases de Música y el Coro — Nicole Heffels

The objectives of the music classes for the Kindergarten and ESTAR Primary School are to teach the children singing, basic music theory and to recognize some important musical instruments. Another part of the program is to use musical games to improve the children's concentration and body coordination. In the school choir the children are learning Ecuadorian folk songs and at the same time more about their own culture. The children are also developing their musical ear and improving their voices.

El objetivo de las clases de música en el Jardín y Escuela ESTAR es enseñar a los niños a cantar, teoría básica y a reconocer varios instrumentos. Otra parte del programa es fortalecer la concentración y expresión corporal de los niños a través de juegos musicales. En el coro de la escuela los niños están aprendiendo canciones típicas de Ecuador y al mismo tiempo aprendiendo más sobre su cultura. Además, los niños tienen la posibilidad de desarrollar su oído y mejorar su voz.

Workshop Classes / Talleres

Leather Workshop / Taller de Cuero — Nicole Heffels

In the leather workshop girls from CENIT's Secondary School have an opportunity to learn about this craft alongside their other vocational and academic studies. With the girls we make wallets and key rings to sell to volunteers and abroad. The girls receive a percentage of the selling price which helps them to be more financially independent from their families. We hope that there will be a dedicated, long term volunteer to lead students in this project from September.

En el taller de cuero niñas del colegio de CENIT pueden aprender acerca de esta profesión además de sus otros estudios de corte y de temas más académicos. Con las niñas elaboramos billeteras y llaveros para venderlos después a voluntarios y en el extranjero. Las niñas ganan un porcentaje del precio de los productos, lo cual les ayuda a ser más independientes de sus familias. Esperamos que haya un voluntario dedicado a largo plazo para manejar este proyecto desde Septiembre.

Art Class / Taller de Arte — Theresa Schmidt

The art class continues every Thursday afternoon here in CENIT. In recent months we have been painting a lot of small wooden boxes and selling them in the volunteer office. We also had a new British volunteer join the class (Pip) who brought with her materials for making and painting our own candles, so we learnt together how to make candles. Everyone greatly enjoyed experimenting with this new activity — we tried different colours, perfumes and shapes, and we finally painted the candles.

We have also lately been doing other craft activities such as making Origami birds, paper roses and other decorations. As always the women are highly motivated and the class environment is fantastic.

El taller de arte sigue cada jueves aquí en CENIT. En los últimos meses nos hemos dedicado a pintar cajas de madera y a venderlas. Además vino una voluntaria de Inglaterra (Pip) que trajo todos los materiales para elaborar y pintar velas, así que hemos aprendido cómo hacer velas. A todas les gustó mucho experimentar con esta nueva actividad — usamos colores, perfumes y formas diferentes, y finalmente pintamos las velas.

Últimamente estamos haciendo otras manualidades como pájaros de origami, rosas de papel y otras decoraciones. Como siempre las mujeres están muy motivadas y el ambiente del curso es fantástico.

Medical Programs / Programas Médicos

Clinic / Clínica — Stacy Sprando

I am happy to report that things in the clinic have been going quite well over the past several months. In May we held a health fair for all CENIT families and the students at CENIT's Secondary School where we presented the following themes: first aid, safety in the home, personal hygiene, dental health and nutrition. After the health fair we handed out hygiene kits to each of the families in attendance. The kits included: toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo and soap. Then in June we were able to present another health fair on sexual and reproductive rights, family planning, healthy pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

In May we completed health checks on all of the children in the ESTAR Primary School, the Rosa Virginia Secondary School, CEA Camal (tutoring centre) and the Street Outreach program. Also, at the beginning of July a group of medical students and two doctors from the US came to provide treatment and do health checks on children in the Camal market. The group also brought donations of medication and anti-parasite pills and with this medication we were able to provide anti-parasite treatment to 70 children. 

Over the past several months there have been many changes in the volunteer make-up of the clinic. Priyanka Rao and Emily Corcoran both finished their volunteer work at CENIT and returned to the US and Samantha Wong (who was in charge of the vision project) returned to Canada.  Two new volunteers, Laura Platt and Jonathan Demaree, became clinic volunteers, helping out with the vision project and the street clinic, however they finished their work in mid July and are heading back to the US. Stacy Sprando, the clinic coordinator recently finished her 10 months working at CENIT and will be returning to the US at the end of July. The new volunteer who will be working at CENIT during the summer months is also from the US and her name is Marisa Jones. Sonia Burbano is still working as the nurse in CENIT and doing a fabulous job caring for patients and doing outreach to educate families and children on important health topics.

Estoy feliz de informar que los proyectos de la clínica han ido bien en los últimos meses. En Mayo tuvimos una feria de salud para todas las familias de CENIT y las estudiantes del colegio "Rosa Virginia" donde presentamos los siguientes temas: primeros auxilios, seguridad en el hogar, higiene bucal y nutrición. Después de la feria regalamos una colección de artículos de aseo a cada familia presente. El regalo incluía: cepillos de dientes, pasta dental, hilo dental, champú y jabón. En junio presentamos otra feria de salud, esta vez sobre derechos de reproducción y sexualidad, planificación familiar, embarazo saludable y enfermedades de transmisión sexual.

En Mayo hicimos chequeos médicos a todos los niños de la Escuela ESTAR, Colegio "Rosa Virginia", CEA Camal y el programa de Rescate de Calle. Además, a principios de Julio vino un grupo de estudiantes de medicina y dos médicos de los EEUU para proveer tratamiento y hacer chequeos médicos a los niños del mercado El Camal. El grupo también trajo donaciones de medicinas y pastillas anti-parásitos, y con estas donaciones pudimos dar tratamiento contra parásitos a 70 niños.

En los últimos meses hemos tenido muchos cambios en los voluntarios trabajando en la clínica. Priyanka Rao y Emily Corcoran terminaron su trabajo y regresaron a los EEUU y Samantha Wong (quien estaba a cargo del programa de oftalmología) regresó a Canadá. Recibimos a Laura Platt y Jonathan Demaree quienes ayudaron en el programa de oftalmología y la clínica de calle, sin embargo ellos también han terminado su estancia en CENIT y regresan a los EEUU al final de julio. La nueva voluntaria que estará en la clínica durante el verano es también de los EEUU y se llama Marisa Jones. Sonia Burbano, la enfermera de CENIT, sigue con su trabajo maravilloso cuidando pacientes y promoviendo temas de la salud importantes con las familias y niños.

Dental Health Project / Proyecto de Dentista — David Kahlert

It's difficult to believe that after a year I'm finally entering my last weeks in CENIT, Ecuador and  Latin America! Before reflecting on my overall experience I'm going to describe some of the important recent events from the project.

In June we were contacted by three Irish dentists who were interested in volunteering for a few weeks at CENIT doing treatment or using their skills and knowledge however was best needed. Happy, and a little surprised by their generous offer, I started to plan their schedule at CENIT. Due to insufficient funds and lack of dental equipment I thought that the best activity for the new volunteers would be to carry out dental checks on all CENIT children — kindergarten, primary school, street outreach, etc. — and start working on a health campaign. I spoke with Sister Blanca Rosa, CENIT's Director, and explained to her the great opportunity of the dentists coming to volunteer. She told me that we could ask the Sisters from the Recoleta (another house run my the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Quito) if we could use their dental clinic. The Recoleta Sisters agreed, and after buying some necessary equipment and fixing things up a bit, we started doing treatment in both the morning and afternoon. They were two hard weeks of working long days, but they turned out to be the most effective weeks during my time running the project. From the general check-ups, which we did before starting to work in the clinic, we chose children for treatment that had the most urgent problems. When the dentists continued with their travels of South America I was left to revise all the paperwork concerning what we had done and I made sure that everything was in order for the next volunteers managing the project.

Looking back over my year at CENIT there were moments of success where a lot was achieved by the project, and there were times when nothing seemed to go well — dentists would suspend appointments a the last minute, children wouldn't turn up or parents would forget or be uninterested. At times I would feel frustrated and unappreciated, but there were always families who cared a lot for the wellbeing of their children, who listened attentively and willingly accepted my advice. At CENIT there were always people who took the time to listen to my problems and frustrations, and who helped me to find solutions or motivated me and gave me new strength to carry on. Be it volunteers, staff members, coordinators or the Sisters — everyone helps. In the end, despite changes in mood and mixed feelings, I will leave CENIT extremely happy! I will definitely miss it a lot — the children, work colleagues, volunteers and Ecuador itself. After such a long time we're like one big happy family! To future volunteers I can only wish that they enjoy their time as much as I did!

¡No puedo creerlo pero después de un año estoy en mis últimas semanas en CENIT, Ecuador y América Latina! Antes de escribir un poco sobre mis sentimientos y mi impresión general voy a describir los acontecimientos de las últimas semanas de mi proyecto.

En junio recibimos un email de tres dentistas irlandeses quienes querían trabajar en CENIT por algunas semanas haciendo tratamientos o ayudándonos con sus conocimientos en cualquier manera. Feliz y un poco asombrado de su oferta generosa empecé a planificar su horario en CENIT. A causa de la escasez de recursos económicos y la falta de instrumentos dentales pensé que lo mejor sería hacer chequeos dentales a todos los niños de CENIT — jardín, escuela, rescate de la calle, etc. — y empezar con campañas de salud. Hablé con la Hna. Blanca Rosa, la Directora de CENIT, y le expliqué la gran oportunidad con los dentistas. Ella me dijo que podríamos pedir a las Hermanas de la Recoleta (otra casa de las Hermanas del Buen Pastor en Quito) el uso de su clínica dental. Las Hermanas de la Recoleta estuvieron de acuerdo, y después de las compras necesarias y algunos arreglos, empezamos a ofrecer tratamientos en la mañana y en la tarde. Fueron dos semanas duras de horario largo, pero las más efectivas de todo  mi tiempo manejando el proyecto de dentista. Después de los chequeos dentales generales, que hicimos antes de empezar en la clínica, pudimos elegir a los niños que tenían los problemas más urgentes para tratar en la clínica. Después de que se fueron los dentistas tuve que revisar los papeles de todo lo que hicimos para dejar todo en orden para los voluntarios siguientes a cargo del proyecto.

Mirando atrás en el año trabajado en CENIT ha habido momentos de éxito donde hemos hecho mucho progreso en el proyecto, y ha habido momentos en donde nada parecía funcionar — dentistas suspendían citas a última hora, no llegaban los niños o los padres se olvidaban o no colaboraban. A veces uno se siente frustrado y poco apreciado, pero siempre hay familias a quienes sí les importa el bienestar de sus niños, escuchan atentos y aceptan los consejos con buena voluntad. En CENIT siempre hay personas que toman tiempo para escuchar mis problemas y molestias, y me ayudan con soluciones o dándome nuevas fuerzas para continuar. No importa si son voluntarios, educadores, coordinadores o hermanas — todos te ayudan. Al final, después de cambios de humor y sentimientos mezclados ¡puedo salir de CENIT muy contento! Seguramente lo voy a extrañar mucho — los niños, compañeros de trabajo, voluntarios y Ecuador en sí. Después de tanto tiempo juntos somos como una gran familia. ¡Para los siguientes voluntarios solo puedo decir que disfruten el tiempo de la misma manera que yo lo hice!

Adopt a Dream / Invierte en una Vida — Theresa Schmidt

At the end of April the Adopt a Dream program received a new social worker called Silvia Diaz. Stephanie Scherrer, a social work student from Switzerland, also joined the Adopt a Dream team. Stephanie is doing her university placement with CENIT and is a great asset to the program, with the help of both Silvia and Stephanie things have been running smoothly. During the last few months we have been able to closely monitor the social situation of participants and we have intervened to offer the appropriate help to families in many cases. We have also improved our documenting system and updated all of our information. We currently have 47 children who are receiving support from Adopt a Dream.

Earlier in the year we unfortunately had a pregnancy within the program and the student concerned had to withdraw. As a result we decided to start giving sex education workshops to the participants of Adopt a Dream. In the three workshops that we have given until now we have covered the themes of sexuality, relationships, sexually transmitted diseases and methods of contraception. After the summer break we will continue with these workshops with the objective of providing sex education to all participants of Adopt a Dream, Sagrada Familia and ViaNiños (other sponsorship programs that work with CENIT).

A finales de Abril recibimos a una nueva trabajadora social para el programa de Invierte, Silvia Diaz. Además vino una estudiante de trabajo social de Suiza, Stephanie Scherrer. Stephanie está haciendo su pasantía en CENIT y es una gran ayuda para el programa, con Silvia y Stephanie ahora podemos trabajar mucho mejor. Durante los últimos meses hicimos un buen seguimiento social y pudimos intervenir en muchos casos para brindar la ayuda necesaria a las familias. Además hemos mejorado la documentación del programa y actualizado todos los datos. Ahora tenemos 47 niñas/os que reciben apoyo de Invierte.

Desafortunadamente hubo un embarazo y la niña tuvo que retirarse del programa. Por eso decidimos dar talleres de educación sexual a los niñas/os de Invierte. En los tres talleres que dimos han aprendido sobre  sexualidad, relaciones, enfermedades de transmisión sexual y métodos de prevención. Después de las vacaciones de verano vamos a continuar con estos talleres con el fin de ofrecer educación sexual a todos los participantes de los programas de Invierte, Sagrada Familia y Via Niños (otros programas de becas).
