The sisters of the Good Shepherd, educators, girls, boys and parents of the CENIT family thank God and ask for many blessings for all of your who offer your care and affection. We are so grateful to all of the organisations who make a huge effort to keep up their support in CENIT"s different projects, without which we would not be able to continue. They are: ViaNiños; ECHO; Sonrisa; Alas para Todos, UPAS, Belluno, Insieme si puó…; Sagrada Familia.
Only Jesus, the Good Shepherd (suscita?) people with a big heart in order to extend his kingdom of love. The Bible verse states:

1. On the 24th August the plans corresponding to the new school year 2009-2010 were carried out, for programs and departments, with the presence of educators and also volunteers who began their work for a year.
2. In September the educator Amparito began her activities en the Street Outreach programs in the Mayorista market.
3. On the 1st October we carried out the first workshop for graphic-designed plastics for the work in Street Outreach with all of the new volunteers.
4. En October we opened Street Outreach in the market San Roque, with Piedad Merino as the responsible Educator and the volunteers present at that time.
5. On the 26th October Aarón Pérez, a volunteer from the United States, gave a donation of antibacterial gel, because of the high risk of swine flu in various sectors.
6. On the 26th October the German volunteer Stefanie Heinzelmann donated colouring books for the Street Outreach program.
7. On the 5th November Alexander Palmquist, another volunteer from the United States, donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for the girls and boys of CENIT.
8. On the 16th November Aarón Pérez donated storybooks in Spanish and English for the English classes in the primary school and high school.
9. On the 22nd November the high school dance was performed in an artistic festival for the day of "no violence against women"
10. The week from the 23rd to the 27th November
11. In the month of November the children began to receive regular medical attention (every Friday) from Doctor Juan Mosquera
12. On the 26th of November the children, volunteers and educators of Street Outreach had a visit to the water museum, the point of which was to make the children realise the importance of protecting water for the future.
13. On the 18th December, Mr Luis Tipan made a donation of 30 bags of sweets for the children of CENIT.
14. On the 21st December the German volunteer Markus Mauthe donated school materials for the children of CEA (Homework Help).
15. On the 31st December former volunteer Anette Boersen donated money for the Street Outreach program and second-hand clothes for the children of CENIT.
16. In January of 2010 Svenja and David Peccator made a monetary donation for the needs of CENIT.
17. Thanks to the donation of former volunteer Emily Abrash, on the 4th February we installed 10 new computers in the IT classroom of the high school in the presence of Sara Guerett, president of the organisation ECHO.
18. On the 5th February, Barbara Singler made a monetary donation to the Street Outreach Program.
19. To conclude, with the new electrical installation CENIT had to pay the electricity company approximately $5,000 dollars, which was finished in January of this year and the database is still not finished until now.

1. El 24 de Agosto se realizaron las Planificaciones correspondientes al nuevo Año Escolar 2009-2010, por programas y departamentos, con la presencia de educadores y voluntarios que inician su trabajo voluntario por un año.
2. En Septiembre la Educadora Amparito Haro empieza sus actividades en el Programa Rescate de Calle  en el Mercado Mayorista.
3. El 1 de Octubre se realiza el primer Taller de Técnicas Grafo- plásticas el trabajo  en   Rescate de Calle, participaron todos los voluntarios nuevos.
4. En Octubre iniciamos con Rescate de Calle en el Mercado San Roque, con la Educadora de Calle Piedad Merino como Responsable de este nuevo sector y los voluntarios  presentes en esa fecha.
5. El 26 de Octubre el Voluntario de Estados Unidos Aarón Pérez realiza la donación de algunos desinfectantes en gel , para Rescate de Calle.
6. El 26 de Octubre la voluntaria  Alemana  Stefanie  Heinzelmann donó algunos libros de dibujar para Rescate de Calle.
7. El 5 de Noviembre el voluntario Alexander Palmquist de Estados Unidos donó  cepillos y pastas dentales  para l@s niños de CENIT.
8. El 16 de Noviembre el Voluntario Aarón Pérez de Estados Unidos donó cepillos y pasta dentales para l@s niños de CENIT.
9. El 22 de Noviembre se presento la Danza del Colegio "Rosa Virginia" en un Festival Artístico por el Día de la No Violencia contra la Mujer.
10. La semana del 23 al 27 de Noviembre se realiza una Sensibilización sobre la No Violencia contra la Mujer a toda la Comunidad Educativa de CENIT.
11. El mes de Noviembre l@s niños empieza la atención médica regular con la presencia del Doctor Juan Mosquera.
12. El 26 de Noviembre l@s niños de Rescate, voluntarios y educadores correspondientes a los 3 Mercados visitaron el Museo del Agua, cuyo objetivo fue que l@s niños reconozcan la importancia de cuidar el Agua para el futuro.
13. El 18 de Diciembre, el señor Luis Tipan realizó la donación de 30 fundas de caramelos para l@s niños de CENIT.
14. El 21 de Diciembre el Voluntario Markus Muathe donó útiles escolares para l@s niños del Centro de Apoyo.
15. El 31 de Diciembre la ex-voluntaria Anette Boersen realizó una donación económica  para Rescate de Calle y de ropa usada, para l@s niños de CENIT.
16. En Enero del 2010 los señores Svenja y Peccator realizaron una donación económica para las necesidades de CENIT.
17. Gracias a la donación económica de la ex-voluntaria Emily Abrash el 4 de Febrero se instalaron 10 computadoras nuevas en la Sala de Computación del Colegio Artesanal "Rosa Virginia", con la presencia de Sara Guerett, Presidenta de la Organización ECHO. También una donación económica para la Profesora de la Escuela ESTAR y refrigerio para los niños de la Escuela(frutas). 
18. El 5 de Febrero la Voluntaria Barbara  Singler realizó una donación económica para Rescate de Calle.
19. Para concluir con la nueva instalación eléctrica, CENIT debió pagar a la Empresa Eléctrica aproximadamente 5.000,00 dólares, se terminó de ejecutar en Enero del 2010 y la Base de datos  no se concluye hasta la presente fecha, esperamos tenerla pronto.

San Roque:

My name is Dana and I work with four other volunteers in a big room in San Roque market. We leave CENIT at 9:30 in order to arrive at the market at 10. When we arrive we collect all the children from their stalls. Every day we have about 25 children.

When we get to the room we start by singing in a circle. We sing "Buenas días", "La Familia Zapo", "El Gusanito", "La Semana" y "El Pato". After that we play "What"s the time Mr Wolf?" and the kids love this game!

After that we do creative activities, but this work is very difficult for the children who are on average four years old, and because of that we usually just colour. On occasions we buy fruit and vegetables and eat them with the children because it's amazing how usually they only eat ice cream and never eat anything healthy.

To finish we wash their hands in the bathroom which we have in the room, but there is only one sink so we need a lot of time for that. We then take the children back at 11:45.

The children in San Roque are really sweet. We have a lot of help because Piedad often comes to speak to the parents or to solve any problems there might be.

Soy Dana y trabajo con cuatro Voluntarios en una sala grande en San Roque. Salimos de CENIT a las nueve y media para llegar al mercado a las diez.

Después recogemos a los niños de los puestos. Cada día tenemos más o menos 25 niños.
Cuando estamos en la sala empezamos  cantando en un círculo. Cantamos "Buenas días, la familia zapo, el gusanito, la semana y el pato".

Después jugamos "Quien tiene miedo al lobo" ¡A los niños les encantan este juego!
Más adelante hacemos trabajos manuales.

Pero este trabajo es muy difícil  porque los niños tienen cuatro años de promedio y por eso pintamos la mayoría de las veces. En ocasiones compramos frutas y verduras y comemos juntos porque es increíble que los niños solo coman caramelos y helado y nunca comida sana.

Por último, lavamos las manos en el baño, que hay en la sala. Pero este baño solo tiene un lavabo y necesitamos mucho tiempo para este.  Llevamos a los niños de vuelta a las 12 menos cuarto.

Los niños en San Roque son muy amables y dulces! Tenemos mucha ayuda porque la Educadora Piedad,  viene muchas veces con nosotros para hablar con los padres o para solucionar problemas.

Mayorista

Mayorista is one of the biggest and also one of the poorest markets in Quito. We currently have between 4 and 6 volunteers at any given time, depending on how many volunteers we have in Rescate in total. We work in the mornings. Once in the market we collect the children from their stalls in order to take them to the table where we always play with them. Our activities are as follows: firstly we wash our childrens' hands and then we show them how to brush their teeth. This is a very important part of Rescate de Calle. The children need to be aware of the basic hygiene measures such a personal hygiene.

Normally we sing with our little ones, when time allows. The most popular songs are "El pato con una pata", "Buenos días, niños", "La semana" and others. We always have special activities. A lot of the time we do creative activities and similar things but we also try to teach the children basic comptencies such as numbers, the alphabet and colours etc.

From the beginning of January we have a lot more children tan before, which has come about thanks to our Educadora Amparito, who is in the process of trying to form good relationships with the parents of the children and is then also responsible for sustaining them. One difficulty we have with Mayorista is that we do not have a room in which to work with the children, but Amparito is working on this. She is currently in disucssion with the owner of the market over this. Every Tuesday and Friday the market is occupied so we then go to a park which is situated about 10 minutes away from the market. We have to cross some big roads with loads of traffic in order to get there and so we have to be quite careful.  We hope that the situation will continue to improve as it is now. There is still a lot to improve and a lot still to do, but we are on the right track.

El mercado "Mayorista" es uno de los mercados más grandes y también más pobres de Quito. Nosotros somos 4 a 6 voluntarios, depende cuantos voluntarios tiene CENIT en total,  trabajamos en las mañanas. Una vez en el mercado, nosotros recogemos a los niños de sus puestos para llevarlos a la mesa, donde estamos siempre para jugar con ellos. Nuestras actividades son las siguientes: Primero, nosotros lavamos las manos de nuestros niños, después les ensenamos  como ellos deben cepillar sus dientes. Esa es una parte muy importante del programa "Rescate de calle". Los niños tienen que estar conscientes de las medidas higiénicas más simples como la higiene personal. Normalmente nosotros cantamos con nuestros pequeños, como el tiempo lo permite. Las canciones más populares son "El pato con una pata", "Buenos días, niños", "La semana" y otros más. También algunos juegos son un tema. (p.e. El gato y el ratón o agua y limón) Siempre tenemos actividades especiales. Muchas veces hacemos manualidades y cosas similares, pero también tratamos de enseñarles conocimientos básicos como números, el ABC o colores etc.

Desde el principio de enero  tenemos más niños que antes, lo que sucedió gracias a nuestra educadora Amparito. Ella trata de formar una buena relación con los padres  y también esta responsable de mantenerla. Un problema o bien una dificultad del Mayorista es, que nosotros no tenemos un salón en el mercado. Pero Amparito está trabajando en eso.

Momentáneamente está conversando y debatiendo sobre este asunto  con las autoridades  del mercado. Cada martes y cada viernes la mesa está ocupada; entonces nos vamos a un parque, que está situado aproximadamente 10 minutos del mercado Mayorista. Nosotros tenemos que cruzar unas calles grandes con mucho tráfico, por eso hay que tener bastante cuidado. Esperamos que la situación se desarrolle mejor  que  ahora. Todavía hay mucho para mejorar y hacer, pero estamos siguiendo un buen camino.

Rescate de Calle — Camal

Rescate de Calle at the market camal involves two hours of drawing, singing, dancing, gluing and often full on chaos. After two months with the children of the market vendors, I'm used to having glue on my trousers and toothpaste in my hair. Every day we start by getting the kids to wash their hands and brush their teeth: an adventure everyday anew. The kids really love to play with the foam. Sometimes they seem to take a shower and not just wash their hands. It's amazing to see their enthusiasm. To work with children who have such a background and live in these conditions is not always easy, but every smile, every hug and every word of gratitude (either of children or parents) show you that your works is necessary and useful. I really like working at Camal. And after two months I know the kids and their parents pretty well. It's a great experience to be part of a child's life in this way.

To work in Rescate de Calle means you always need to be ready for surprises. You never know how many children will participate this day, what will happen, what problems you are you going to have… But this is also why this work is so interesting. With this program we try to give the children a bit of structure in their everyday life; teach them about friendship, values and good behaviour, but also how to use a pair of scissors or to distinguish red from blue. The facts that many children are between the ages of three and five and that the majority don't join the program everyday, make it difficult to make a real on going, progressive project with the children. But for them often it's enough to have a place where, for two hours every day, they have the opportunity to be a child, without having to work or to take responsibility for their families' income.

Rescate de Calle en el mercado Camal consiste en dos horas de pintar, cantar, bailar, pegar y a menudo lleno de caos. Después de dos meses con los niños de los vendedores del mercado, estoy acostumbrada tener goma en mis pantalones y pasta dental en mi pelo. Todos los días empezamos con ayudar a los niños lavar las manos y limpiar los dientes: una aventura nueva cada día. A los niños les encanta jugar con la espuma. A veces parece como no solo lavan las manos sino más se ducharan. Es increíble ver  su entusiasmo. Trabajar con niños que tienen la clase de experiencia que tienen y que viven en condiciones así como viven, a veces no es fácil, pero con cada sonrisa, cada abrazo y cada palabra de gratitud (no importa si venga de los niños o de los padres) te muestra que tu trabajo es necesario y que les ayuda. Me gusta mucho trabajar en Camal, y después de dos meses yo conozco bastante bien a los niños y a sus padres. Es una experiencia chévere tener un papel en la vida de un niño de este modo.

Trabajar en Rescate de Calle significa que siempre tienes que estar listo para sorpresas. Nunca sabes cuántos niños van a participar, que sucederá, cuales problemas vas a tener, pero así que este trabajo es tan interesante. A través de este programa intentamos dar a los niños un poco de estructura a sus vidas diarias; enseñarles sobre la amistad, valores y buen comportamiento, además como usar tijeras o distinguir entre rojo de azul. Los niños tienen entre 3 o 5 años y que la mayoría no participan todos diariamente, lo hacen difícil ser consistente y tener un programa que progresa, desarrolla. Pero para ellos parece que es suficiente tener un lugar, en donde por dos horas cada día  tienen la oportunidad de ser niños, sin tener que trabajar ni tomar la responsabilidad para los ingresos de la familia.

Chiriyacu

This has been my first month of working for CENIT in "Rescate de calle" in the market of Chiriyacu and I have been really enjoying it. The first couple of weeks were challenging as teacher strikes meant that many of the schools were shut and we had 15 to 20 children approximately in each session. Although it was difficult to control such big groups it was nice to get to know so many children and also to infiltrate the kid's gangs of friends and families that hang around each other in the markets.

Since the teaching strikes we have considerably less children in the sessions  which primarily I didn't enjoy as much  but it has meant that I have been able to build up relationships with the "regulars" that come to up to the room at the same time everyday to see us. It's nice that some of them come on their own as it shows they must enjoy the games and activities that we have been preparing for them.

Problems with the children do pop up from time to time, for example we have one child who steals all the other children's activities and also a boy called Estevan who is quite destructive, however on the whole we have been very lucky and have really lovely children who enjoy the activities and are excited to see us each day.

Estoy trabajando en CENIT en Rescate de Calle en el mercado de Chiriyacu y lo estoy disfrutando mucho. Las primeras dos semanas exigente ya que huelgas de profesores significaron que muchas de las escuelas se cerraron y tuvimos entre 15 y 20 niños en cada sesión. Aunque era difícil manejar a los niños en grupos tan grandes, era bonito conocer a tantos niños y además a involucrarnos en sus grupos de amigos y sus familias que siempre están juntos en los mercados.

Desde las huelgas de profesores ahora tenemos notablemente menos niños en las sesiones, que primeramente no disfruté tanto pero eso ha significado que podía establecer buenas relaciones con los niños que vienen regularmente. Es bueno que algunos vengan independiente porque muestra que deben disfrutar los juegos y las actividades que preparamos para ellos.

Problemas con los niños ocurre de vez en cuando , por ejemplo tenemos un niño que roba las actividades de todo los demás y también un niño que se llama Esteban que es bastante destructivo, no obstante en general tenemos mucha suerte y tenemos niños realmente cariñosos quienes disfrutan mucho los actividades y están emocionados de vernos todos los días.

Playtherapy / Terapia de Juegos

The play therapy (terapía de juegos) is for children with behavioural problems and others who have been unable to develop good values due to bad experiences in the past.

At the moment we have 6 children who participate in the therapy: Daniella; Jenni; Carlita; Jonathan; Denis; Bianca and Anaí.

In the last two weeks we have had been using the topic of the friendship. We have been teaching them when to say "thank you", "buen provecho", "good morning", "good evening" and we have also been trying to teach the children to share. In order to present this topic to the kids we told a short story, using a doll to demonstrate good and bad behaviour. This method proved to be effective so we intend to continue using the doll in this way.

At first, it was relatively difficult to work with the children because they didn"t know us and because of that they didn"t participate very well. But after a few days it was better and they starting participating much more. It is also generally better if we have four volunteers because that means there is at least one volunteer for every two children. In my view this is very important because the point of play therapy is that we improve the behaviour of the children and this is more achievable when every child gets proper attention.

I really like the Playtherapy and I really want to continue with it, but that what we still need to improve is our preparation and planning. If we have a plan that we can work with, we have a better idea about what we are doing and have already done and in doing that can make better progress in the future.

La terapia de juegos es para niños que tienen problemas con el comportamiento, unos no pueden imaginarse los valores a causa del pasado.

En este momento tenemos unos 6 niños, un chico y 5 chicas: Danielita, Jenny, Carlita, Jonathan Denis, Bianca y Anaí. En las últimas 2 semanas tuvimos el tema de la amistad. Tienes que decir: gracias, buen provecho, Buenos días, Buenas noches. También presentamos cuentos buenos y cuentos malos sobre este comportamiento con el títere. Que es hasta ahora siempre nuestro compañero.

Al comienzo, estuvo  muy difícil para trabajar, porque los niños nos no conocieron y por eso no participaron bien. Pero después de 1-2 tardes estuvo más fácil. Además es más fácil trabajar con ellos cuando somos  4 voluntarios, que casi cada voluntario puede trabajar con un niño. Para  mí esto es muy importante porque el sentido de la terapia de juego es que los niños  mejoren  el comportamiento y por esto necesitan mucha atención.

En la terapia de juego me siento bien con los niños. Pero lo que yo quería mejorar es la planificación. Si la terapia es más planificada, podemos trabajar mejor y además podemos lograr más.

CEA Centro de Apoyo

The most exciting news from CEA is that we have recently appointed a new CEA Volunteer Coordinator. We had started to notice a bit of a breakdown of communication between the CEA educadores and the volunteers and we decided we needed to improve this somehow. The volunteer coordinators, Gladys Peréz and Marianne Pownall discussed various issues in CEA and decided that electing a CEA Coordinator from the volunteer side, as we have had in the past, would help to open the communication lines between the Ecuadorian staff and the volunteers. Marianne and Gladys attended the Educadores monthly CEA meeting last night to take the first steps in opening up communication. We shared information from the volunteer side and they shared information with us. They then asked Jessica Berkes, a German volunteer from ViaEV if she would consider becoming CEA coordinator. She agreed to take on the role and is currently working with Marianne and the CEA volunteers to try and develop the program and overcome some of the problems we face. We are working on improving discipline, providing more organised activities to distract the children who have finished their homework, create more consistency with information provided to the teachers about volunteers, therefore allowing them to orientate new volunteers effectively. We are also, from now on, going to be sending a representative from Voluntariado to the monthly CEA meetings of the Educadores. On top of that we are holding weekly CEA meetings between Jessica (CEA coordinator), Marianne (Volunteer Coordinator) and the volunteers of CEA. Since these innovations we have an elected volunteer who each day reads a story for the children and another one or two volunteers who arrange and activity to do with the children.

La noticia más emocionante del CEA es que recién nombramos una nueva coordinadora por la parte del voluntariado. Empezamos de darnos cuenta de que había sucedido un poco de una interrupción de comunicaciones entre los educadores y los voluntarios de CEA y decidimos mejorar la situación de alguna manera. Los coordinadores de voluntarios, Gladys Pérez y Marianne Pownall conversaron de varios temas importantes del CEA y decidieron que elegir un(a) coordinador(a) para CEA de la parte voluntariado, como teníamos antes, ayudaría abrir las líneas de comunicación entre los educadores y los voluntarios. Marianne y Gladys asistieron la reunión de los educadores del CEA del mes anterior para tomar las primeras etapas en abrir la comunicación. Nosotros compartimos información del lado voluntariado y los profesores del CEA compartieron sus inquietudes con nosotros. Después de esa reunión exitoso. Pedimos a una voluntaria alemana de ViaEV si considere hacerse coordinadora del CEA y por suerte estuvo de acuerdo de aceptar el papel y está trabajando actualmente con Marianne y los voluntarios del CEA a intentar desarrollar el programa y superar algunas de los problemas que nos enfrentan. Estamos trabajando en mejorar la disciplina, proveer más actividades organizadas (para distraer a los niños que ya han acabado sus deberes), crear más consistencia con la información provista a los profesores sobre voluntarios, de ese modo les permitan ubicar a los voluntarios eficazmente.

Desde ahora, vamos a ir mandado un representante del Voluntariado a todos las reuniones mensuales de los educadores. Además de eso nosotros estamos teniendo reuniones semanales entre Jessica (coordinadora del CEA), Marianne (coordinadora de los voluntarios) y todos los voluntarios del CEA. Desde estas innovaciones, hemos nombrado voluntarios para leer una historia diaria a los niños y otros voluntarios para preparar y realizar una actividad con los niños.

Clinica

The first few weeks of September saw the start of the new school year, as well as a fresh set of volunteers in CENIT"s clinic. Sonia, our Ecuadorian nurse, has stayed on, and her team of volunteers includes Jessie Liu, the clinic co-coordinator with Sonia; Annie Miller, the coordinator of the ophthalmology program; Kai Normann, the coordinator of the dentist program; Christian Sester, a volunteer for the dentist program; and Jennifer DeWeese, an American nurse who works with Clínica de Calle.

As soon as school started, we began with the health checks for everything from cavities, to feet/face/ear fungus, to fleas, to nutrition, to domestic abuse and violence.  We just completed all of ESTAR and colegio and are beginning health checks with children in CEA and Rescate de Calle. For those we are able to treat, we treat then and there. For others, we identify and refer them to CENIT psychologists, social workers, or help them receive specialized services at hospitals through our ophthalmology or dentist program. If they need further consultation, students, parents of students, and individuals in the surrounding community are welcome to visit our clinic doctor who comes every Friday afternoon.

Since one hundred pounds of treatment is worth one ounce of prevention, we have continued to educate CENIT students and their parents about their health. Last month, we terrorized the students of ESTAR with pictures of filthy teeth, foot fungus, fleas, and stomach worms as part of our class on hygiene and transmission of illness. The students of colegio also saw the same pictures in their sexual education class in which we covered hygiene and alimentation specific to women and girls, as well as an introduction to women"s rights and the perceived roles of women in society. Each month, we also cover a different health topic with parents of CENIT students. In the last three weeks, we have discussed nutrition with over one hundred parents, and we"ve ended our session with a list of healthy recipes and samples of two nutritious dishes. This coming week, we will begin our first health campaign, which will be on prevention and treatment of flu, given the current national and global focus on pandemic swine flu. The campaign will kick off with an educational play put on by the volunteers in the clinic, and certain subjects will be emphasized with informative posters and pamphlets the volunteers will present to each class.

The ophthalmology and dentist programs have just gotten underway. Kai and Christian will be taking 15 students to the dental department at la Universidad Central this week, and Annie will be taking 10 students to Vista para Todos at the end of this week as well.

We are continuing to visit patients in Camal for Clínica de Calle. Jennifer and Jessie go to Cisnes and Caballos every Tuesday and Thursday to check blood sugar and blood pressure of regular patients, as well as provide health information to anyone who cares to listen to them chatter on about diet, exercise, health resources, and responses to fielded questions. Later this month, they will be performing stand-to-stand personal chats with people working in the Camal about nutrition, and in November, they and Sonia will be giving presentations about the flu and hygiene.

In all, we"re looking forward to this year, and we"re sure to stay busy with the various programs and projects on top of the daily visits by children asking for pastillas and vitaminas!

En las primeras semanas de Septiembre empezó el nuevo año escolar, y también llegaron un grupo nuevo de voluntarios a la clínica. Sonia, nuestra enfermera ecuatoriana, se ha quedado, y su equipo de voluntarios incluye Jessie Liu (coordinadora de la clínica), Kai Normann (coordinador del programa dentista), Christian Sester un voluntario en el programa dentista y Emma James, una enfermera de los Estados Unidos que trabaja en el programa Clínica de Calle.

Tan pronto como empezó la escuela, empezamos nosotros con los exámenes de salud para caries, hongos de pies/cara/oreja, pulgas, nutrición, abuso domestico y violencia. Acabamos de terminar dando los exámenes a todas las chicas de ESTAR y del colegio y estamos para hacer los exámenes con los niños de CEA y Rescate de Calle. Para ellos que podemos tratar, les tratamos en el acto. Para los demás, identificamos y derivamos a uno de los psicólogos, trabajadores sociales o les ayudamos recibir tratamiento especializado en un hospital a través de nuestro programa de oftalmología  o programa de dentista. Si necesitan más consulta, estudiantes, padres de estudiantes y la comunidad de alrededor tienen la posibilidad de visitar a nuestro medico de la clínica que viene todos los viernes por la tarde.

Ya que 100 libros de tratamiento valen una onza de prevención, seguimos enseñando a los estudiantes y a sus padres sobre su salud. El mes anterior, aterrorizamos  a los estudiantes de ESTAR con  fotos de dientes sucios, hongos de pies, pulgas y lombrices como parte de nuestra clase de higiene y transmisión de enfermedades. Los estudiantes del colegio vieron las mismas fotos  también en su clase de educación sexual en cual hablamos de higiene y alimentación específicos a mujeres y chicas, en adición a una introducción a los derechos  de mujeres y los papeles percibidos de mujeres en la sociedad. Cada mes elegimos un tema de salud diferente  con los padres de los estudiantes de CENIT. En las últimas tres semanas, hemos discutido nutrición con más de cien padres, y terminamos las sesiones por entregarles una lista de recetas saludables y darles degustares de dos comidas nutritivas. La semana que viene empezamos con nuestra primera campaña de salud, que se tratará de la prevención y tratamiento de la gripe, dado al actual foco nacional y global en influenza porcina. La campaña comenzara con una obra educativa realizada por los voluntarios de la clínica, y temas ciertos serán enfatizados con carteles y panfletos informativos que los voluntarios presentarán a cada clase.

Los programas de oftalmología y dentista  empezó.  Kai and Christian llevarán 15 estudiantes al departamento dental en la Universidad Central esta semana.

Continuamos a visitar a los pacientes en Camal para Clínica de Calle.  Emma y Jessie se van a Cisnes y Caballos todos los martes y los jueves a revisar el azúcar en la sangre y presión arterial de los pacientes regulares. Además proveen información de salud a cualquiera persona que quiere escucharlas charlar sobre dieta, ejercicio, recursos de salud y respuestas a preguntas.

Dentist Program

My name is Kai Normann and I am the Coordinator of the Dentist Program.

The Dentist Program has just started this week and there is a lot to take care of. I work together with Christian, my assistant in the Dentist Program.

Every Monday, we take two children from the markets to the "Centro de Salud" close to CENIT. The Dentist at the "Centro de Salud" provides free treatment for the children and they just have to pay for the medicine they need.

We are also in charge of all the children at CENIT - the high school and the elementary school. There are approximately 200 children at CENIT and many of them have problems with their teeth. We have an agreement with the "Universidad Central", through which they provide dental treatment for twenty children every Friday.

Mi nombre es Kai Normann y soy el coordinador del programa  dentista.En el  programa  dentista hay mucho que aprender.  Yo trabajo junto a  Christian, mi ayudante en el programa  dentista. Cada lunes llevamos a dos niños de los mercados al Centro de Salud cerca de CENIT. El dentista en el Centro de Salud provee tratamiento gratis para los niños y ellos que lo necesiten solo tienen que pagar sus medicamentos.

Además estamos encargados de todos los niños que asisten el colegio y la escuela de CENIT. Hay aproximadamente 200 niños en CENIT y muchos de ellos tienen problemas con los dientes. Tenemos un acuerdo con la Universidad Central, con ello nos proveen con tratamiento dental para 20 niños cada viernes.

English classes: 1-3rd Level in the "Escuela"

I'm Christian Sester and since the beginning of the new school year I've been teaching the primary classes in English, it's a bit more than a month now. I like my Job very much because I can be very creative but the things I'm teaching are very basic.

When I started with the first hour of the "1st level" I wrote some greetings on the board and wanted them to copy the things in their folders. Then they told me "Hey we cannot read and write", and I realized how difficult it will be to teach them things in English. Now I'm playing many games with them, let them print, singing songs or doing other creative stuff with them. A problem is that they cannot really memorize things and I often have to repeat them. I started to teach them the greetings and the family.

The second level is very hyper and I have my problems make them listen to me. But they understand the things I teach them and with lots of games I make them listen to me.
The third level is the one I like most because they learn very fast, always listen to me and it makes it much fun to teach them. Next week I'm going to write my first test with them. Let's look how much they know!

Soy Christian Sester y desde el principio del nuevo año escolar estoy enseñando las clases de inglés en la Escuela ESTAR. Ya has sido un poco más de un mes. Me gusta mucho mi trabajo porque me permite ser muy creativo pero al mismo tiempo todas las cosas que estoy enseñando son muy básicas.

Cuando empecé con la primera clase del primer nivel, escribí unos saludos en la pizarra y quise que los copiaran en sus cuadernos y después me dijeron "oye, no podemos escribir ni leer" y me di cuenta de que difícil iba a ser enseñarles cosas en inglés. Desde entonces jugamos muchos juegos, les dejo pintar, cantar canciones, o hacer otras actividades creativas con ellas. Un problema es que no son buenas con acordarse de las cosas y a menudo tengo que repetirlas. Empecé a enseñarles saludos y vocabulario de la familia.

Las niñas del segundo nivel son muy hiperactivas y tengo problemas en que puedan  escucharme, pero entienden lo que les enseño y con los juegos les hago escucharme.
El tercer nivel es el  que me gusta más porque aprenden muy rápido y siempre me escuchan - todo eso lo hace muy divertido enseñarles. La semana que viene voy a hacer mi primera prueba con ellas. ¡Vamos a ver cuánto ya saben!

Adopt-a-Dream / Invierte-en-una-Vida

As usual, there's a lot going on with Adopt a Dream.  To begin with, our previous coordinator, Theresa Schmidt has left CENIT to return back to her home in Germany.  Theresa spent one year here at CENIT and in that time she did wonders for Adopt a Dream. Moreover, our program volunteer, Stefanie ____, has also left us after ___months here. Stephanie and Theresa: we miss you both tons!!!

Other than that, school has just started, which means Adopt a Dream is crazier than ever. Fortunately, almost all of the kids have enrolled in classes and bought their school supplies. We have two new children in the program — Pamela Tipan and Estafania Bolaños. They are both beautiful, bright, young girls and we are very happy that we were able to place them in the program.

I should also add that not only have we changed location (we are now on the ground floor), but we have just finished painting the new office and it looks great (well at least 3 of the 4 walls do)! On a final note, we have introduced a new incentive program for the kids. From now onwards, at the end of each trimester, the kids with the highest marks will receive a prize. Hopefully this will help some of the kids with lower grades to study more and try harder.

Como siempre, hay mucho pasando en Invierte. Primero partió de CENIT nuestra coordinadora anterior  regreso a donde vive, Alemania. Theresa pasó un año aquí en CENIT y en  ese tiempo hizo maravillas para Invierte. Además nuestra voluntaria del programa Stefanie nos ha dejado después de 5 meses  un  buen trabajo. ¡Stefanie y Theresa les extrañamos muchísimo!

La escuela acaba de empezar, significa que Invierte, por suerte casi todos los niños se han inscrito en las clases y compraron sus materiales para la escuela. Tenemos dos niños nuevos en el programa — Pamela Tipan y Estafania Bolaños. Ellas son jóvenes, hermosas, listas y nos alegramos ponerles en el programa.

Debería decir también que nos cambiamos de oficina  (ahora estamos en la planta baja), hemos  pintando la nueva oficina y parece chévere (¡bueno por  lo menos tres de las cuatro paredes!)

La última cosa que contarles es que hemos introducido una motivación  para los niños. Desde ahora, al final de cada trimestre las niñas con la notas mejores recibirán un premio. Esperamos que ayude a esforzarse más a  los niños con notas  bajas.

Bueno, eso es todo por el momento. Les mantendremos al día e informados.

Fiestas de Quito

On the 4th December, after the established program with the children and teenagers, we carried out a program and fancy dress competition with the participation of the volunteer and educators, with the aim of promoting the camaraderie amongst everyone.

Almuerzo Navideño

On the 21st December we also had the Christmas Lunch, with all of the children and teenagers from all of the markets, the school, high school and CEA (Homework Help).

Fiesta Navideña 2009-2010

On the 22nd December we carried out our own program for these dates, which consisted of: the presentation of a play by the theatre group which was prepared by German volunteer Barbara Singler with students from the high school, and also the presentation of the choir organised by volunteer Annie Miller with students from the third grade of the primary school.

Coro Navideño

This group of volunteers organized a Christmas choir, in the Centro Comercial El Recreo, were they collected funds for the Street Outreach Program.

Dia de la Mujer

On March 8, 2010 we celebrate Women's Day with parade participation of the entire education community, volunteers, the presence of Peace Bands Schools sector, and representatives of community stakeholders. Finally we end our tour at the Mercado "Chiriyacu", with two conferences about Spirituality and Women's Rights today.

El 8 de Marzo del 2010 celebramos el Día de la Mujer, con la participación  y desfile de toda la Comunidad Educativa, Voluntarios,  la presencia de las Bandas de Paz de las Escuelas del sector, Representantes de los Actores Comunitarios. Finalmente terminamos el recorrido en el Mercado Chiriyacu , con dos conferencias relacionadas con la Espiritualidad y Derechos de la Mujer en la actualidad.
