Dear Friends of CENIT, Queridos Amigos de CENIT,

Hello and welcome to the September edition of our quarterly updates. It is an exciting and busy time at CENIT as the new school year as has just started. It's been great to see lots of old faces, smiling and happy to be back at school and lots of new faces too in CENIT's Kindergarten as well as in our other programs.

Some news from CENIT is that we are really happy to welcome back Martha Merino, who is working as a Social Worker for the children from CEA and San Roque. We are also pleased to welcome back Gladys Perez, who is working as a Social Worker for the children of ESTAR and Kinder. We are happy to welcome a new Psychologist, Violetta Lopez and a new general member of staff, Marlon Román, who will be working in the kitchen as well as doing cleaning.

Some news from the clinic, volunteer Gabriel Tonkin who was responsible for the Medical Department here at CENIT is leaving us. We would like to thank him for helping CENIT as Coordinator of Health Services, his support was extremely valuable, especially with those who needed it most.

We are lucky to have three new long term German volunteers who are filling important positions here at CENIT. Albrecht is coordinating Medical Services, Adrian who is running the Leather course and teaching English in ESTAR and Peter who is working in the Kindergarten as well as working on Production and sales.

The new school year kicked off in style with an Inauguration ceremony that was well attended by students, families, staff and volunteers. There was singing and presentations from the Director and Coordinators, teachers were presented to parents and families were encouraged to take an active role in their children's education. The afternoon was also aimed to motivate the children in their school work and to feel proud to be members of CENIT.

During the summer holidays, we ran a Summer Camp for approximately 100 children from Camal market, which was a great success. A group of 18 volunteers planned and carried out educational and recreational activities during August. The children had a fantastic time and learned lots of new things. We took the children from the summer camp on a swimming trip, which was a great success all round; volunteers and children alike had a great day out! Thanks to the volunteers from Intervol and Travel Aid who worked hard fundraising before they came out to Ecuador and made all this possible.

Thanks to a donation from Travel Aid, we have been able to make some improvements around CENIT. For example, we have painted all the benches for the kitchen / eating area, we have had the plumbing sorted out and now we have hot water in the kitchen for washing up. Thanks to a donation from Grove Street Methodist Church, we have made improvements to the toilet facilities as well. Some volunteers from Italy also helped with fixing the bathrooms.

Recently the girls from the high school (2006-2007) graduated. There was a graduation ceremony where 37 girls and 8 boys collected their certificates. The girls also put on a fashion show to display the clothes they had made, ranging from sports wear to wedding dresses. We are really proud that the majority of these students are now studying in other schools.

We are looking forward to a visit from Foundation Charity Anywhere on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th October. They are going to bring a team of Doctors and Dentists to see all the children from the Kindergarten, the primary school, secondary school and CEA. It should be a challenge for them to see around 300 children so we wish them the best of luck!

As you will discover as you read on, CENIT has had many successes over the past three months and many programs are going from strength to strength. We hope that you enjoy reading about what each program has been up to during these months, and thank you for caring!

Hola y Bienvenidos a la edición de septiembre de nuestra revista trimestral. Estamos muy ocupados en una temporada emocionante aquí en CENIT así que el nuevo año lectivo recién empezó. Ha sido muy bueno ver muchos niños del año anterior, sonriendo y felices por estar en CENIT otra vez y también tenemos muchos niños/as nuevos en el jardín y en otros programas.

Noticias de CENIT: somos muy felices de que regresó Martha Merino y está trabajando de nuevo en CENIT como trabajadora social de los niños de CEA y San Roque. También nos alegramos de que regresó Gladys Pérez, cuyas responsabilidades incluye trabajo social con los niños de ESTAR y Kinder. También damos la bienvenida a una nueva Psicóloga, Violeta López y a Marlon Román (Servicios Generales) que trabaja en la cocina y ayuda en la Limpieza de CENIT.

Otra noticia de la Clínica de CENIT, el voluntario Gabriel Tonkin que era responsable del departamento medico se marcha, le damos gracias por ayudarnos como coordinador en el área de salud, su ayuda fue muy valios, espeicialmente con las personas que mas lo necesitaban.

Tenemos suerte de tener tres voluntarios nuevos de largo plazo de Alemania, quienes están realizando trabajos muy importantes aquí en CENIT. Albrecht está coordinando los servicios médicos, Adrián está enseñando las clases de cuero e inglés en ESTAR y Peter trabaja en el jardín y también está encargado de producción y ventas.

El nuevo año empezó con una ceremonia de inauguración a la cual asistieron los estudiantes, familias, educadores y voluntarios. Había canciones y una pequeña introducción de la Directora y Coordinadores lo cual se presentaron los profesores para que los padres de familia los conozcan. También les dimos ánimo para tomar un interés activo en la educación de sus hijos. Además la tarde era para dar ánimo a los niños que estudien mucho y para que se sientan orgullosos de ser miembros de CENIT.

Durante las vacaciones, realizamos un campamento de verano en el cual participaron aproximadamente 100 niños del mercado Camal y fue un gran éxito. Un grupo de 18 voluntarios planificaron y realizaron actividades educativas y recreativas durante el mes de agosto. Los niños se disfrutaban mucho y aprendieron varias cosas nuevas. Al finalizar los talleres, llevamos los niños del campamento a la Piscina que también fue un gran éxito ¡Los voluntarios como los niños se divirtieron mucho! Fue un paseo muy bueno para todos. Gracias a los voluntarios de Intervol y Travel Aid, quienes hicieron posible todo esto.

Gracias a una donación de Travel Aid, hemos podido mejorar unas cosas en CENIT. Por ejemplo, pintamos las bancas para el comedor y arreglo de las tuberías y mejoraron el sistema de modo que ahora tenemos agua caliente en la cocina para lavar la vajilla. Gracias a una donación de la Iglesia metodista Grove Street, hemos mejorado los servicios higiénicos también. También los voluntarios de Italia ayudaron con el arreglo de los baños.

Recién se graduaron las niñas del colegio del año 2006-2007. Había una ceremonia de graduación donde 37 niñas y 8 niños recibieron sus certificados. Las niñas hicieron un desfile también para mostrar la ropa que habían elaborado durante el año. Había todo hasta ropa deportiva y vestidos de boda. Estamos muy orgullosos de que la mayoría de estos estudiantes estén estudiando en otros colegios ahora.

Estamos esperando una visita de Fundación Charity Anywhere, lunes 15 y martes el 16 de Octubre de 2007. Van a traer un equipo de Médicos y Dentistas para atender a todos los niños de los siguientes programas Jardín, la escuela "Estar", el colegio "RV" y CEA. Debe ser un reto atender a unos 300 niños y les deseamos mucha suerte!

News from the Markets / Noticias de los Mercados

Cisnes and Caballos

Since the third of September, when school started, the Cisnes market no longer has a lot of children; the majority of them are now in school. A lot of children go to school during the afternoon and do homework during the morning. Over the last few days, we have had between three and ten children in Cisnes market. The kids have been between two and four years old.

The current situation has been difficult as there has been a shortage of volunteers. For this reason we decided to put together the markets Cisnes and Caballos, however we know that this is only a short term solution; each market has this own habits. Now we meet together outside the CEA building, which is the place where Caballos meet.

We begin together in the morning singing and playing and then continue with activities, like painting and mathematics. The children are very happy to meet each other and participate with great pleasure in each activity which is proposed.

We hope that new volunteers will come soon to help us; the objective is to be able to separate the two markets again in order to provide a better service and also to facilitate the search for new children to join our programme.

Desde el tres de Septiembre, fecha que iniciaron las clases en Quito, el mercado Cisnes no tiene muchos niños porque la mayoría fue a la escuela y algunos se van a la escuela por la tarde pero trabajan en sus deberes escolares por la mañana.

Durante los últimos días vinieron al programa de Rescate de Calle tres y diez niños de edades diferentes como: dos y cuatro años.

La situación actual es un poco caótica, porque faltan voluntarios en este mercado. Ahora se queda solo una voluntaria en Cisnes. Por eso, decidimos juntar el mercado Cisnes y el mercado Caballos, aunque sepamos que es una solución adecuada, cada mercado tiene sus propias costumbres. De momento nos encontramos cerca de la sala de CEA, lugar de encuentro del mercado Caballos.

Empezamos cada mañana cantando y jugando antes de seguir con actividades de pintura, y de trabajo escolar como matemáticas etc. Los niños tienen mucho placer de encontrarse, ellos son abiertos a para realizar las actividades propuesta.

Esperamos que lleguen pronto voluntarios nuevos para apoyarnos, el objetivo es bueno separar cada mercado para que cada uno pueda seguir su proyecto y facilitar la búsqueda de niños nuevos para el programa.

Santa Maria

Everything is going well at Santa Maria at the moment. There have been some big changes though; the main one being that since school started again, many of our regulars are no longer able to join us in the mornings but we have managed to recruit several new faces and the advantage of a smaller group (10-15 children) is that we can aim activities specifically at pre-school hildren, so that they understand more than some of them did when they were in a group with much older children. We also have more time to help each child with activities and talk to them to ensure everything is ok at home and that hey are happy. We have started to introduce more educational activities, such as painting-by-numbers and colouring-in and naming animals. The children all enjoy colouring-in and are very creative. This activity also helps them to learn to share and wait their turn, since they have to swap coloured pencils with other children when they need another colour. We have recently introduced several new songs to our routine, and have been playing games like rounders with sports equipment which was donated to CENIT. We also try to read a story at the end of every day, which the children really enjoy. We are looking forward to the next few weeks as we have planned lots of craft activities and new games.

De momento, todo va bien en Santa Maria. Sin embargo, hemos tenido algunos Cambios grandes; el mas grande nuevamente la escuela muchos de nuestros niños regulares ya no pueden venir en la mañana, pero hemos Logrado tener varios nuevos niños y existe una ventaja en tener un grupo mas pequeño- podemos dirigir las actividades específicamente a los niños preescolares para que entiendan más.

Tambien tenemos mas tiempo para ayudar a cada niño con las actividades y asegurarnos que todo este bien en casa y que sean felices. Hemos empezado a introducir actividades más educativas, tales como pintar- números e identificar animales. A todos los niños les encanta pintar. Y son muy creativos. Esta actividad también les enseña a compartir y esperar ya que tienen que canjear entre si cuando quieren otro color. Recientemente, hemos introducido varias canciones nuevas a nuestra rutina, y hacemos uegos como 'rounders' con el equipo deportivo que fue donado a CENIT. También tratamos de leer un cuento cada día, lo cual les gusta muchísimo a los niños. Tenemos muchos planes para las semanas que vienen, con respeto a las actividades creativas y mas juegos nuevos.

Mayorista

In Mayorista market every day, from Monday to Friday, CENIT volunteers carry out different activities with the children who work in the market with their parents. During the holidays, we generally work with about 40-50 children and during the school term, this drops to around 15 children.

Every Wednesday the volunteers take the children to play in a little park near the market, and the other days consist of manual and creative activities. For example, the activities carried out this summer were: animals of the farm (parts of the body and animal noises), geometric shapes (inserted in a poster which is about a city), dancing and singing, pictures about faces, shapes and balloon animals (made by a volunteer), the Ecuador flag (built like a puzzle), the parts of the body and the silhouette of the volunteers, birthday parties and free painting (to develop older children's imagination).

The children are of different ages and each activity is suitable for a specific age range, at times for the children who are 8-10 years old, at times for the ones who are 3-5 years old. The difficulty is managing to involve everybody, but the children are almost always happy to participate in the activity offered.

The volunteers also teach them that it is better to say "please" and "thank you" when you want to ask for or receive something. We have noticed that the children are more respectful amongst themselves while they are taking part in the activities.

En el mercado Mayorista de lunes a viernes los voluntarios de Cenit hacen diferentes actividades con los niños y niñas que trabajan allí con los padres. El número de niños durante las vacaciones es de 40-50 y en el periodo escolar el número de niños es de 10. Cada miércoles llevamos a los niños a jugar a un parque pequeño cerca del mercado, en cambio los otros días hay muchas actividades educativas y creativas.

La mañana empieza con la limpieza de las manos y de los dientes; después se revisan la fecha y las reglas que deben ser respectadas para trabajar bien, cantamos las canciones de bienvenida, por fin los niños se ponen en un círculo y empiezan las actividades.

Por ejemplo, las actividades que se desempeño en este verano son: los animales de la granja (las partes del cuerpo), las figuras geométricas (insertadas en un cartel que representa una ciudad), el baile y el canto, retratos de su propia cara, formas y animales con las bombitas (hecho de un voluntario), la bandera del Ecuador (construida como un puzzle), las partes del cuerpo y la silueta de los voluntarios, el significado de la fiesta de cumpleaños, dibujo libre (para desarrollar la imaginación de los niños mas grandes).

Los niños tienen edades diferentes y cada actividad es adecuada a veces para los niños de 8-10 años, a veces para los mas pequeños de 3-5 años: el problema es que no siempre es posible implicar para todos, pero a menudo los niños colaboran para seguir la actividad de mejor modo.

Los voluntarios también enseñan a los niños que es mejor decir "por favor" y "gracias" para pedir o recibir algo y los niños durante las actividades son muy respetuosos entre ellos.

Play Therapy / Tutoría de Juegos

Recently we have changed the participants in play therapy because for a long time we have had the same children, now they are growing up and going to school and therefore they no longer have the need or time to continue with us. Last week we were delighted to go with the social worker to meet the new children she had chosen for the program. We have three new children and five in total who are now enrolled in Play Therapy and benefiting from the one on one attention we offer. It is important that we work with children of this age group because at this stage in their lives they are starting to discover and seek new things outside of their family environment.

We are here to support them and encourage them to develop to the best of their ability. It is probable that the children do not have faith in what they can achieve and furthermore in building a future for themselves outside of what is socially expected. It is fundamental that from a young age the children believe in themselves in order to construct a brighter future. To help us with these objectives we are now using techniques from Montessori to help the children to learn and to improve their confidence through simple but fun activities.

Últimamente hemos cambiado los niños en este programa porque hace mucho tiempo estábamos con los mismos niños y este año la mayoría se fue al jardín o escuela. Entonces la semana pasada fuimos con la trabajadora social para encontrar los nuevos niños que ella ha elegido. Tenemos tres nuevos niños y en total cinco niños que pueden aprovecharse de nuestra programa tutoría de juegos y la atención que los voluntarios les ofrecen. Estos niños son de los mercados de Cisnes y Santa Maria tienen entre tres y cinco años. Es muy importante que trabajemos con niños de esta edad porque por la primera vez están descubriendo nuevas cosas afuera de sus familias, tienen el deseo de investigar.

Estamos aquí para dirigirles en un camino que va a ayudarles a desarrollar lo mejor que puedan. Además una cosa muy fundamental es que los niños creen en si mismos, es probable que los niños no tienen confianza en lo que pueden alcanzar o que tal vez no pueden construir un futuro afuera de lo que todo el mundo espera. Por eso estamos intentando de animar a los niños de una edad temprana que tienen una capacidad de hacer lo que quieren alcanzar. De modo que estamos usando las ideas de Montessori para que los niños aprendan y mejoren su confianza mientras hacen actividades divertidos.

San Roque

Morning / Por la Mañana

Over the last two weeks since school started, we have been able to enrol fourteen children from the San Roque program into schools. In San Roque now, we are helping the older children with their homework and we are playing games with the younger children and helping prepare them for school.

We have a new place that we can use every Friday, where the children who don't have any homework can go to play. There are loads of great toys and the children really enjoy it.

En el programa de San Roque hace dos semanas que empezó la escuela y se matriculo catorce niños del mercado San Roque en la escuela. Ahorra ayudamos a hacer los deberes y con los niños pequeños hacemos nivelación para que pueden ingresar a la escuela. Ahorra tenemos un nuevo lugar para los viernes, nos vamos con los niños que no tienen deberes a la casa de la niñez que es un cuarto con muchos juguetes bonitos y los niños están muy felices de recrearse.

Afternoon / Por la Tarde

The San Roque project is now in a difficult sutuation, due to the fact that we are changing location. For this reason, the children are unable to come and to do their homework with us at the moment.

The parents already know about this situation, but it is difficult for the children to understand why we suddenly had to stop our activities, because they are used to coming every afternoon to work with the teachers and volunteers.

We are confident that soon we will find a safe place, where we can continue working with the children. Meanwhile we are working on creating educational materials and reviewing the planning, together with our coordinator. The situation is critical; Director, Coordinator, Educators and volunteers are all working really hard to find astable and secure place to carry outour work.

We are aware that every minute is really important and we hope to solve this problem as soon as we can, for the benefit of everyone at CENIT.

El proyecto San Roque esta actualmente en una difícil situación, ya que nos estamos cambiando de lugar y por esta razón los niños no pueden venir a resolver sus tareas con nosotros.

Los padres de familia ya están enterados de esta situación pero para los niños no es tan fácil entender porqué de repente tuvimos que suspender las actividades. Ya estaban acostumbrados a llegar todas las tardes para trabajar con los profesores y los voluntarios.

Los educadores de este programa tenemos la firme convicción de que muy pronto encontraremos un lugar seguro para seguir trabajando con los niños.

Mientras tanto estamos trabajando en la elaboración de material didáctico y reorganizando las planificaciones junto con nuestra coordinadora, estas situación es realmente crítica, Directora, Coordinadora, Educadores y Voluntarios realizamos un trabajo muy fuerte con las autoridades de la zona San Roque y el Municipio de Quito para poder obtener un local estable.

Sin duda alguna pensamos que cada minuto que pasa es muy importante y esperamos realmente solucionar este problema lo más pronto posible para bien de todos los que hacemos el "CENIT".

Kinder

CENIT's Kindergarten / "Jardin" is a place for children between 5 and 6 years. For these children, this project offers the possibility to get a basic education, which is needed to enter primary school successfully. That means, first of all we help them adjust to a learning environment, further to teach them basic knowledge (dates, numbers, some English, the alphabet, etc). Another of our aims is to teach about personal hygiene.

All the children, who are involved in this program are working children, therefore it is extremely important, that the children can at least during their time in the Kindergarten live their childhood. Playing, singing, dancing and doing handicrafts are the most common tasks. Through these activities, the children also learn to work in a team and improve their social skills.

Even if the Jardin only lasts five hours every day from Monday until Friday, it is very efficient. 100% of the Kindergarten students in 2003/2004 matriculated into a formal educational institution.

At the moment one Ecuadorian teacher and two volunteers are working in the Jardin. The main task of any volunteer working in this Project is to be a good role model for these children. Apart from this, the volunteers are helping the teacher in her daily work.

El Kindergarten de Cenit llamado "Jardín" es un lugar para niños de 5 anos. Para esto los niños están en este proyecta tienen la posibilidad de obtener una educación, la cual es necesaria para entrar a la escuela primaria eficientemente. Esto significa que todos debemos ayudar para el aprendizaje los cuales necesitan un conocimiento básico (datos, números, algunas palabras en ingles el alfabeto, etc.) Una buena educación de higiene es también muy importante.

Todos los niños quienes están involucrados en este programa son niños trabajadores, por esto es importante que los niños puedan ir al Jardín y vivir su niñez.

Jugando, cantando, bailando son las tareas que ellos hacen, los niños también aprenden a trabajar en equipo para sus futuras aspiraciones.

Aun así el Jardín solo dura 5 horas cada día de lunes a viernes y es muy eficiente. 100% de los estudiantes del Jardín matriculados en el 2003/04 tienen una educación institucional.

Al momento una profesora ecuatoriana y dos Voluntarios están trabajando en el Jardín. La principal tarea de los voluntarios es trabajar en este proyecto para tener una buena aceptación de los niños. Los voluntarios están ayudando a la profesora en su trabajo diario.

Help with Homework / Ayuda con las Tareas Diarias

CEA

On the 10th of September, one week after the vacation, CEA (Centro de Apoyo Escolar) started again. The teachers working in the project are Gisela, Kristina, Rolando y Juan Carlos, the volunteers are Julia and Maxie.

At the moment there are about 20 children, about 13 boys and 7 girls. The children are in the 2nd to 7th grade. We meet a CENIT at 9 o' clock in the morning and go together to the Camal market. The children who have homework do their homework and the ones without do some extra work. After having their snack, we go back to CENIT at about 12 o' clock. Back at CENIT, we have lunch with about 15 children.

El 10 de septiembre, una semana después de las vacaciones CEA (Centro apoyo escolar) empezó de nuevo. Los profesores que trabajan en el proyecto son Kristina, Rolando y Juan Carlos, los voluntarios son Julia y Maxie. De momento están normalmente unos 20 niños en CEA. 13 chicos y unos 7 chicas. Los niños están en el segundo hasta el séptimo grado. Llegamos a las nueve de la mañana a Cenit para ir juntos al Camal. Los niños que tienen deberes se dedican para terminarlos y a los que no tienen deberes les damos una tarea. Después de la colación regresamos a las 12 a Cenit donde almorzamos con unos 15 niños.

Learning English at CENIT / Aprender Inglés en CENIT

English classes in ESTAR (Levels 1-3) / Clases de Ingles Estar 1, 2, 3

As the school year has only just begun, up until now I have only taught a few classes of English in each grade. Let me begin with Grade 1:

There seems to be quite a lack of basic knowledge, for example, many of the students struggle to write. This class needs to be taught with quite a lot of patience but I am confident that they will improve.

Grade 2 seems to be the strongest of all. Most of the students know numbers from 1-20 and know to ask and respond to basic questions. About 70% of this class learns pretty quickly, while the rest needs a bit more time.

The 3rd Grade seems to be somewhere in between. They have basic knowledge of the English language, though many struggle with the numbers and are unable to ask or answer questions regarding their age. Furthermore, considering their age, they seem to be fairly slow at picking up new things. I hope to be able to facilitate their learning in a more effective manner as I am aware that without exception the students are willing to learn.

Primer nivel

Hay problemas grandes con los básicos, como la lectura y escritura de los niños, los niños son muy difíciles pero espero que ve a mejorar, los voluntarios necesitamos tener mucha paciencia

Segundo nivel es más fuerte.

La mayoría saben los números del 1 al 20 y preguntas y respuestas básicas. El 70% de esta clase puede aprende rápido.

Tercer nivel se encuentra en el centro de los dos.

Los alumnos tienen conocimientos básicos de ingles, pero muchos no saben los números por esta razón es difícil saber la edad de ellos. También yo pienso que ellos son los estudiantes más lentos en aprender nuevas cosas de consideración de su edad. Espero que sea posible de traer más efectividad en esas clases porque algunos de los alumnos quieren aprender. El problema de la efectividad esta presenta en muchas áreas y espero que haya una solución pronto.

English classes in RV (the Secondary School) / Classes de Inglés en RV

Two weeks ago the English classes started with the 8th, 9th and 10th graders from CENIT. In total there are over a hundred girls all between the ages of 12 and 18. The girls only have a very basic level of English, something which the test we carried out this week made very clear. They do however, all seem motivated to learn. The 8th graders started out learning how to introduce themselves, "My name is..." and other simple sentences. The 9th graders started with the verb to be. It was nice to see that the 10th graders already knew to be so we did new verbs instead. Hopefully they will all learn a lot before the end of the year including irregular verbs, asking questions, talking about ourselves, conjugating verbs, adjectives and maybe even some prepositions for the oldest ones (and hopefully much more). Although everything is working out great at the moment, we do however need replacement teacher for the coming two semesters. The transition will surely be challenging, but I'm confident that we will manage this well. We will be back in three months time with more news!

Hace tres semanas que empezaron las clases de ingles para los 8º, 9º y 10º de Cenit. En total hay más de 100 chicas entre 12 y 18 años que ponen atención en clases. Las chicas todavía tienen un nivel de inglés muy básico, algo que quedo bastante claro en la prueba que hicieron la semana pasada. Así todas las chicas parecen motivadas por aprender. Las de 8º empezaron aprendiendo a introducirse con "My name is..." y otras frases fáciles. Las de 9º empezaron con el verbo "to be". Las de 10º ya sabían el verbo "to be" así que en vez seguir con verbos. Esperamos aprender mucho antes del fin de año incluyendo verbos irregulares, hacer preguntas, contar sobre si mismo, conjugar adjetivos y quizá también unas preposiciones para las mayores (y ojala mucho más). Aunque todo nos va bien de momento, necesitamos un(a) profesor(a) para el segundo y tercer trimestre. La transición seguro que será difícil, pero también estamos seguros de que nos irá bien. En tres meses volvemos para saber como nos ha ido!

Art Class

During the month of September, we are enrolling women for the Art Class for the year 2007-2008. The Ministry of Education decided that the Art project will be for a fixed period of three years. For this reason, we need to find new women to participate this year; the others have already received their diplomas and are ready to go their own way.

The classes will begin in CENIT on Thursday 8th of October and will run from two until 4pm. First we are going to start the class carrying out basic activities to enable us to evaluate the abilities of the students. Then we can design an appropriate program which is adapted to the level of each person.

In addition, we will offer activities which allow the students to develop their creativity and imagination, for example, painting with music or collage activities. The objective of this class is that at the end of the three years, the women will have another way to assist the family income and that their abilities will be acknowledged and that they will be able to take more pleasure in life.

Durante el mes de Septiembre, hicimos las inscripciones de la clase de Arte del año 2007-2008.
CENIT decidió que el proyecto de Arte será realizado por el periodo de tres años. Por esta razón, tenemos que encontrar a nuevas madres de familia para este año, las otras madres de familia recibieron su diploma y están listas para seguir adelante solas.

El ocho de Octubre empezarán las clases en Cenit, los días jueves, de las dos hasta las cuatro de la tarde. Primero vamos a empezar la clase con actividades básicas que permitirán evaluar el nivel de cada mujer presente. En función de eso, podremos establecer un programa adecuado y adaptado al nivel de cada persona.

Adicionalmente realizaremos actividades que sirven para desarrollar la creatividad y la imaginación, como pintura con música, o actividades de collage. El objetivo de esta clase es que al final de los tres años las mujeres tengan un recurso más para ayudar en la economía de sus hogares, que su talento sea reconocido y que ellas puedan disfrutar más de la vida y relacionarse con otras madres de familia.

Leather Class / Clase de Cuero

I have taught the Leather Class a couple of times now and I am slowly getting the hang of it. Although in the beginning there seemed to be a lack of materials, I am slowly catching up and finding where things are.

Also I am slowly getting to know the girls and I get along with them very well. They seem very committed to work hard, although the issue of punctuality needs to be improved.

Right now the class is in a process of constant improvement and I hope that it will continue in this way.

Ya enseñé Clases de Cuero unas veces ahora y estoy comenzando de aprender. En el comienzo faltaron muchas cosas básicas por el trabajo pero esta completando. Compré casi todas cosas que están necesitadas.

Estoy mejorando en conocer a las chicas y creo que ese relación va a ser buena. Las chicas tienen una grande motivación para trabajar, pero también el aspecto de puntualidad necesita mejoramiento. Ahora la clase y su citación esta mejorando y espero que va a mejorar mas.

Production / Producción

The Production-program is divided in two parts. On one the one hand, there is a group of girls, who are working with leather (producing wallets, pencil cases and belts). These products are sold and 90% of the money earned from these sales is given directly to the girls. The other 10% is kept for materials which were wasted in the learning process when they were trying things out or made mistakes. On the other hand, there are some women who work for CENIT, to produce the school uniforms and other items that we need, moreover they are also producing CENIT bags. These bags are so popular that we can sell them on the world market!

Furthermore, CENIT has a card producing workshop, where hands made cards are produced. In this Department, the artist Leonardo is working with us. His cards are very beautiful and also sell very well!
The jewellery-class is another project where girls and Mothers are able to earn money. In this class they are producing jewellery which is also sold on the world market. The girls are working for the same conditions as in the leather class. At the moment it is difficult to sell these products, because there are a lot of other jewellery-making projects in the world.

La producción- del programa esta dividido en dos partes. Por una parte es un grupo de chicas las cuales están trabajando con cuero, ellas están produciendo billeteras, cartucheras y correas. Estos productos son vendidos y el dinero que se gana es el 90% para las chicas. El otro 10% es guardado para invertir y comprar materiales. Por otra parte algunas mujeres quienes trabajan en Cenit producen uniformes para los niño/as de Cenit. Ellas también producen pequeñas mochilas cartucheras, carteras. Los productos son populares y nosotros podemos venderlos en el mercado mundial:

"Leonardo" quien esta trabajando con nosotros en la Tarjetería. Estas tarjetas son muy bonitas y también son vendidas muy bien.

La joyería es otro proyecto donde las chicas pueden ganar dinero. En esta clase ellas pueden producir joyas las cuales son vendidas en el mercado mundial. Las chicas están trabajando en la misma condición como en la clase de cueros. En este momento vender estos productos es un poco problemático porque son muchos y la producción de joyas es a nivel mundial.

Adopt-a-Dream / Invierte-en-una-Vida

Good news about Adopt-a-Dream!

We have 3 new children in our program to which we will be able to provide support. And thanks to another volunteer who studies therapeutic pedagogy one of these kids will receive special treatment!

Apart from that, we managed to convince two other kids who graduated from CENIT's college Rosa Virginia last school year to continue studying in a public college.

We are in the process of organizing the documents for a Peruvian woman (the Mother of one of the children from our program), who is currently illegal in Ecuador in order to legalize her status in the country. She has two children who are Ecuadorian. Up until now it looks like everything will turn out well!!!

Buenas noticias del programa de Invierte en una Vida!

Tenemos 3 nuevos niños en el programa que podamos brindar nuestra ayuda. Y gracias a otra voluntaria que estudió pedagogía terapéutica una de estas niñas que tiene deficiencias mentales podemos ofrecer un tratamiento especial!!!!

Aparte de esto logramos convencer a dos niños del programa en un colegio público a que se graduaron en el colegio Rosa Virginia el año pasado lectivo.

Para una mujer peruana que está ilegal en Ecuador ella tiene dos hijas ecuatorianas de las cuales una pertenece a nuestro programa, estamos arreglando sus papeles para poderse quedar legalmente en el país. Y hasta ahora parece que todo va bien!

Dentist Program

The Dentist in El Camal told us that we couldn't bring CENIT children until October. So we have only brought three of the worst cases to see her in the last three weeks. But their teeth were in such a bad way that we had to give them antibiotics first. After the last treatment she said, that she won't be able to help us until October. This is a real shame because we cannot change to another dentist. Other Dentists are considerably more expensive. So we updated the list of children who have received treatment over the last four months, because the other list was wrong due to a PC breakdown. We have also written emails to most Dental faculties in Germany, asking them if they could advertise for us by putting posters on their notice boards, saying that we are looking for a Volunteer Dentist. We talked with Sister Blanca Rosa and she gave us the option to take ten children by car every week to the University in Quito to treat them there. And we also got in contact with a another organisation, "Charity Anywhere", who will send a team of Doctors and Dentists four times a year to treat all the CENIT kids.

La doctora nos dijo que no puede tratar más a nuestros niños hasta octubre. Entonces solo llevamos en las últimas semanas 3 niños que verdaderamente necesitan tratamiento. Tuvieron que tomar medicamentos antes para desinflamar algunas infecciones que tienen. Pero la doctora insiste que no nos puede ayudar más. Es una pena pero no podemos cambiarlo. También pusimos todo lo que hemos hecho en el año pasado de nuevo en la computadora porque el documento viejo estaba dañado. También escribimos a las facultades de medicina en las universidades de Alemania para que pongan un texto de nosotros en el pizarrón pero todavía no tenemos respuestas. Hablamos con la hermana Blanca Rosa y con el director de la facultad de odontología de la Universidad Central y podemos llevar 10 niños cada semana allá y nos podemos ir en camioneta. Además hay otra organización que nos quiere ayudar que pueden venir 4 veces al año por 2 días al Cenit. Se llama "Charity anywhere" y van a venir algunos médicos y dentistas el 15-16 de octubre.

Street Clinic / Clínica de la Calle

The Street clinic has recently undergone a change of volunteers. We have created a new form for street clinic. Previously, we were using a very old form which meant that the volunteers constantly had to re-write unnecessary information. The new form is more efficient and precise, therefore saves paper and time.

We are using street clinic to promote our normal in-house clinic. A lot of our patients do need to visit the Doctor for various reasons but are wary of doing so as they think it will be expensive and they don't have the money. Therefore we inform them it is free with CENIT and we give them the times and dates the doctors are present. We also promote our other projects, such as sponsorship and schooling. We need to constantly encourage the adults to use our facilities or need to reiterate what CENIT offers. A lot of the people on the streets have very high or very low sugar levels. They do not realise that many of their symptoms may be related to diabetes and their very poor diet. So again we try to always ask about their symptoms and always refer them to our doctor.

Hay un nuevo voluntario en la clínica de calle. Nosotros hicimos una nueva forma para clínica de calle a causa de la vieja forma tenia muchas preguntas innecesarias y nosotros siempre repetimos la misma información. Por eso la nueva forma tiene preguntas mas especifico lo que facilita el trabajo de forma eficaz.

En la clínica de calle, tratamos de promocionar nuestra clínica de CENIT y otros servicios, tenemos por ejemplo escuela. Porque vistamos mucha gente para tomar la presión, además tienen otros problemas. Pero ellos no les gustan visitar a los doctores a causa de que piensen que es muy caro. Por eso nosotros siempre les estamos comunicando que "tenemos una clínica, que es gratuita para ustedes y los doctores están atendiendo en estos días, lunes y miércoles". También hay mucha gente que esta falta de azúcar en su sangre. Este es un gran problema, por esta razón es la causa de muchos problemas de los pacientes. Pues preguntamos, "como se ha sentido" y nos comentan sus síntomas. Si los síntomas son similares a los síntomas de personas con diabetes, les invitamos para que visiten a los doctores de CENIT u otros doctores.

Clinic / Clínica

CENIT's clinic aims to provide free medical attention for CENIT's children, their parents, the people we work with in the markets and to all others who live in the surrounding area of CENIT. To fulfil this aim, a Doctor is attending patients every Monday and Wednesday starting at one o'clock in the afternoon. Furthermore, a gynaecologist is here every other Tuesday. In the Clinic, we are also able to give people the medications prescribed by the Doctor and if we don't have them, we try to buy them. Another thing the clinic can do in some cases is give financial aid to patients needing certain medical exams. The Clinic at CENIT is also ready for any emergency or accident that may happen during the day while the Doctor is absent.

Another important area of our work is preventive education for the children and parents of CENIT. The Clinic works together with the Social Workers and Psychologists to plan and run preventive workshops about subjects such as hygiene, nutrition and sexual education to the children of CENIT. Finally, we also teach some of these classes to the parents.

La Clínica de CENIT da atención médica gratuita a los niños que pertenecen los diferentes programas de CENIT y a los padres de ellos, ayudamos a la gente con quienes trabajamos en los mercados y a los demás del barrio. Para cumplir con esta meta, un doctor está atendiendo cada lunes y miércoles a partir de la una de la tarde, además una ginecóloga dos miércoles al mes. La clínica también puede dar los medicamentos que prescribe el médico a la gente y si no tenemos, tratamos de comprarlos. Además, podemos dar apoyo económico en algunos casos si los pacientes necesitan algunos exámenes. También estamos en CENIT para cualquier emergencia o accidente que pase durante el día si el doctor no está les acompañamos para que tengan la ayuda médica.

Otro campo grande de nuestro trabajo es la educación preventiva para los niños y padres de CENIT. La clínica trabaja junto con los trabajadores sociales y la psicóloga para planear y dar clases de talleres preventivos como higiene, nutrición y educación sexual a los niños/as de CENIT. Además, la clínica se encarga realizar de algunas clases para los padres de los niños.
